Are stun guns or tasers legal to own?

On my last flight back to Santiago, I brought back 2 stun guns in my luggage.
My luggage was searched and there was no problem going through customs at either end. They may not have seen them. My friends here tell me only the police are allowed to own them. I have been getting conflicting stories on this issue. Is a permit needed? Does anyone know for sure?

whats legal and whats reality are usually two different things in the DR.

I am sure customs didnt' see them, they probably would have put you in jail if they did, does not matter if they are legal or not, it would have been an opportunity for them and their cousins at the police to make some money from you.

at a minimum, they would have charged you import duty on them, valuing them at a few hundred bucks each.

they probably didn't know what it was, or thought it was a toy.

I'm not so sure that stun guns are illegal. You can buy Mace and pepper spray just about everywhere.
