i can understand both sides of this story but has anyone ever notice what happen in Boca Chica ? the trade moved north to sosua and boca chica died. there's your living proof of what happens to a town where the #1 commodity is taken away. now, i have visited many towns where there is no real trade and it was most enjoyable but rather boring because there were no discos or real nightlife or any real money in that town.

100% agree in the early 90s Boca Chica was a booming town because of the girls in the late 90s they clamped down on this and the place took a nose dive and still has not recovered.

YEAH RIGHT....you and EDDY keep telling yourselves you are actually doing a good thing paying for these girls....you are actually saving them from a bad life!!!!!!What bullsh$$TTTT. Oh and let's not forget that the girls, being put onto drugs, beaten and treated like meat actually attract tourists to Sosua and the dirty old men who come to Sosua for the girls really make the town into the nicest tourist destination.
Give me a break those men are for the most part pennieless, they live in dirty cheap rooms and probably do not spend more than $20.00 a day (girls included). When will you start realizing that the prostitution is killing Sosua.

Eddy is 100% correct. The girls are the country's #1 most important natural resource. They are the only reason foreign men come here, there's nothing else to keep them coming to this particular country.
Even about 85% of the remittences being sent here from Domincians abroad come from women, almost all of whom are in the sex industry in the countries they currently reside. People here should realize just how important and critical they are and what things would be like without them...then perhaps their status in society would improve for the better.

I kinda understand where Suzannel is coming from.

Alright, I understand that tourism didn't bring or create prostitution in the DR. It is all over the world and nothing is wrong with it.

BUT patting yourself in the back for saving these girls from destitution and boasting about how this business is contributing to the local economy is a bit much, no ??

No wonder Dominican have a such a bad view of expats if that's how you want contribute to their country's economy....

That is exactly what I meant...some posters here are saying that Sosua cannot change and will dissapear if the girls leave.
So they come accross as saying that the sex tourists are actually helping the poor girls and that the girls being there helps the business owners.
They justify their own behaviour or the sex tourists' behaviour by saying that they are doing good things to help the poor Dominican girls. That is why I say give me a break....
Go out with the girls if you want to but don't tell me you are doing it out of the goodness of your heart...........

No, the reason some Dominicans don't like expats is because they don't understand us. Apparently we grow cash, work very little and have alot for it. We fly in and out of the country on vacation 10months of the year, screw around internationally, live like rap stars, have 16 homes, several sex slaves in different countries are best buddies with 50cent and spend every evening down the casino with the NY yankees dropping $10,000US without even thinking about it.
Screwing their women is probably something low down on the list of reasons a Dominican will hate a foreigner. Take a Dominican guys sister and allow her to live with you and you will be flavour of their lives. Sex is cheap here, not only finacially but morally, it is no big deal and I don't think alot of Brits, US or Canadian women can get their heads around this. Don't adjust to it, just accept it!!

That is correct, it is utterly selfish on both parts. Both want something from it and care very little about the other person involved.

I would think that Sex is cheap in any poor country with a lot of tourism, not convinced, it is a Dominican thing....But, I will try to accept it ;)

Whoa. When did I ever say I pay for hookers. Plus you would be surprised the number of girls that get picked up by 70,000.00US$ Jeepetas. I'm sure the owners don't live in dirty cheap rooms. Rather in expensive villas. These guys are either single/divorced or are stuck with nagging/bitching wives and want some decent sex for a change.

Do you really think they're not making their share of contributions through the same mechanism?

I doubt that local Men and Women engaged in hooking create any "major impact" on the overall economy of the country but in Boca Chica and Sosua it makes for tourism in the "off season" and that keeps room occupancy rates and restaraunt/ bar revenues at or above break even.

Nobody chased the Ladies of the evening from Boca Chica. They chased them underground, into houses and hotels which have been converted to that purpose and most of the customers in these places are home grown, born and raised Dominicans. That whole Duarte freak show thing is a scaled down relic of a bygone era. Most of the Girls who work in the casas live in the casas and not on the streets with the freaks (and those old guys with the galoshes and trenchcoats, LOL).

It's a new day and there's civilized ways to do things and that's where I think the "cleanup" is headed. Out of control, unregulated interactions between hustlers and their prey can lead to bad press and the loss of more tourist dollars than it generates. Getting this under control and segregated makes a mountain of good fiscal sense. Look around at the other Caribbean islands where unless you know who to ask and what to ask for you'll never see any evidence of sex tourism at all.

Cleaning up the "Dodge City" of the North Coast doesn't translate into cleaning it out. The place is simply evolving. I think it's a good thing.

i agree that going to church and being raised properly and ect...ect...
is good for family morals

yes we should get rid of the drugs...corruption of the police and government... and prostitution and the little beggars that roam the streets

been workin on that for over 40yrs...how's it goin?
every year there are new people...GONNA SAVE THE DR.

some posters need to realize that our utopia is NOT thier reality....

as far as the prostitution goes....
lose that money and watch the violence increase ten fold
notice how crime increases during the off season but subsides during the tourist season?

No one said this. We are talking about a situation that exists in the DR. There is poverty and prostitution everywhere in this world, but we are talking about a specific place and a specific situation.

Who is trying to convince you these issues only exist in the DR?

Where did you read this?

The 'church ladies' are not going to change their world-view simply by being presented the facts. Their strange assumptions will remain unsullied by reality, no matter how convincingly demonstrated.

So it would probably be smarter just to laugh off their foolish proclamations, and allow them their lily-white dream-world, where all tourists and expats are deprived and depraved old men, who wallow in $10 rooms and who flash their wrinkled privates to unsuspecting school-girls.

These sanctimonious dear-hearts can continue to feel superior and virtuous in their belief that all Dominican women are virtuous, and are simply being exploited and abused by sordid and soulless North American men.

It is best not to confuse them with facts and the complexities of real life, It must be a comfort for them to know what is right and wrong in the world, and to be assured that they and they alone are the truly 'good' ones.

In the US??? "Brothels" for sale (one owned by a woman, named Donna)??? Hmmm ...I haven't seen THAT in the DR!! Good thing we have moral focus in the US. After all, don't we want everyone else to live like we do? :cheeky:

has anyone ever thought to do a survey with these workers to find out what they think of this topic?

instead of us sayin..."this the the right way"...
maybe we should ask them what they think and want
