Default Coffee Beans/SD

Anyone know where I can buy good coffee beans--as in freshly roasted?? to bring back as a present for someone?

I'm going to be in Santo Domingo at the end of January.

Thanks--

Happy New Year!

I do believe thatyou might find some beans at the Nacional Supermarket. Of course, a 911 to Chirimoya might get you a lot better information.

they do sell vacuum packed coffee here, and it will keep real well for an extended period of time.

Anyone else have a suggestion??

Just about everyone I see brings back Santo Domingo Coffee in the white bag. I usually buy the coffee beans in any super market. Just check the expiration date to be sure to get the freshest ones on the shelf. Another brand would be Induban Gourmet Cafe Tostado en Grano.

My wife likes the place on Mella by the Mercado Modello - they grind and sell excellent coffee.

Container-wise, there's still nothing better than a vacuum packed can. By the way, Induban (Industrias Banilejas) has an almost 100% corner of the wholesale local coffee market (actually around 95%). The other day I caught my cousin César (second cousin, thrice removed (grandson of my second cousing Flérida Beltré vda. Américo Melo)) promoting his Barahona grown gourmet organic coffee at the entrance of Plaza Lama on Ave. 27 de Febrero, SD. He was going about it all wrong, the place was wrong, and he had an unattractive Colombian girl with him as helper, and their coffee was brewed on the spot on a U.S. style percolator, making for a watery and tasteless brew...

the place to buy beans is La Cafetera on El Conde, between 19 de Marzo (calle del tapao) and Duarte. they will give you beans if you ask for them instead of ground. If i am not mistaken it also comes from Banilejas -- the address is given on the bag, somewhere up on the Maximo Gomez. But the blend seems to be a bit different from the stuff that Induban normally puts out, certianly different from Santo domingo, the main brand that most people buy (which is good too).

The place on Av. Mella is good too, but their coffee is a bit more acidic (which makes for a nice comparison to the stuff that La Cafetera sells).

Since we are talking about coffee what is the best way to store the bags of coffee beans?
