According to the posted article, some Puerto Rican doctors working in the DR and Haiti are in deep trouble and probably lose their licenses because they were fotographed drinking, etc. No doubt some of it was in bad taste but the fact that some of these guys will lose their jobs and careers is overboard. By all accounts these guys did excellent work no doubt pro bono.

I hope this doesn't affect the amount of volunteers that wan't to come to the DR/Haiti to help. We shouldn't or expect all of the aid workers to walk around with a somber look on their face all of the time, in spite of the tragedy around them.

Doctors are well-known for macabre humour, and as jrhartley says it's easy to understand why. The error of judgement here was to post the photos on a public site.

Agree with the comments.

If they had sent the pcitures first to CNN rather than Facebook prehaps the headlines would have been different.

The biggest outrage in the Dominican community about those photos are the kind of weapons those guardias are carrying. Low level shotguns carried by military personnel is not a good sign.

About the doctors being ripped to death by the media, they have provided 100X the amount of help than any of those self-righteous journalists and media corporations. Being surrounded by death in all fronts 24/7 can be really stressing, they deserve the slack. Maybe without those relaxation times they would have provided a worse service.

Looks like some of the Dominican military are being investigated for lending their weapons to the doctors for the photo - that pic is here:
Ordenan investigaci?n sobre incidente de fotograf?as de soldados del EN

The other thing which doesn't appear to have caused 'outrage' yet is the suspension of medical evacuation flights last Wednesday:

US suspends medical evacuations from Haiti

U.S. suspends Haitian medical flights as Florida hospitals run short of capacity

These flights were stopped for all non American citizens as Florida hospitals are nearing capacity and nobody has taken the responsibility of paying for this care. Undoubtedly it fall upon the American taxpayer. Perhaps monies raised from the big telethon can be used for this purpose and help defray the cost of this care. Just as an aside these flights out continue for citizens and legal permanent residents of the United States.

Hm, maybe the DR should do the same since there is even less money in the DR than in the US for these type of things. Oh wait, that would mean heavy criticism from the NGOs, media source, and the anti-Dominican crowd.

As NALs knows, The Dominicans have more class than that, fortunately.
Anyone who suggests that would ever happen is truly anti-Dominican in my view.

Tragically, you can fairly accurately price up a human life.
For example, we took out public liability insurance in Haiti last year for a civil project we did on the streets of Petionville.
According to the broker we bought more than adequate cover.

The policy was designed to pay out more for accidentally damaging a vehicle than for accidentally killing somebody.

Why am I not surprised?

Good post Chip.

Those who do the most harrowing work in such a demanding environment deserve to goof off a little bit.

I guess the young Haitians who were photographed playing pick-up basketball and jumping rope amidst the ruins of their city should be reprimanded as well...:ermm::ermm::ermm:

I agree with Chip and most of the other posters. Let them blow off some steam without all the BS that CNN is trying to create.

Unbelievable.

and probably those that are doing the most criticizing are sitting home in their recliners, sipping a glass of merlot, watching the 52 inch plasma. they should be put on the next plane to haiti and allowed to assist in mass burials.................also, let them be judged by a jury of their peers, "you didn't go to haiti? you are not on the jury"

I agree with Amparocorp....If you ain't been there, shuth the phuck up!!!

these guys are working 16 hour shifts....gimme a break...

It was wrong to let them play with weapons, especially since no military person should ever surrender his weapon (and they are probably not even loaded!@!)

Dumb photo, dumber reaction (over-reaction)....

They have been defended in the DR papers...

Guess that some of the PC'ers never watched an episode of MASH where the stress of war ( in Haiti's case mass death, injury, and destruction ) caused the doctors to produce behaviors inconsistant with that of their daily civilian routine in order to cope with their environment. Klinger, we need you. You have to behave crazy sometimes in order to keep from growing crazy, "Catch 22".

PJT

I've worked in Search and Rescue squadrons for over 20 years, and after each rescue or recovery( dead bodies) there is a debrief, and the boys usually let lose for a while. This decompression is necessary to deal with the stress. These doctors....etc are under the same stresses. They need to be able to unload the stress.

its seems the reporters have shot themselves in the foot with this one - as most people seem to agree - have they never watched MASH
