Apparently there is a squash court in the Sosua Bary Resort and Casino.
Does anybody know if this is for guest use only, or is the court available for drop-in or non-guest use.
I'll be in Sosua from Feb 26 - March 14, anyone on this board from Sosua play squash?

There are two courts; anyone can use them. They are in the gym on the 3rd floor of the casino building. Gym is open until 8 or 8:30 pm Monday through Friday, except between hours of 1 and 3 pm when it is closed. Saturday gym closes at 1 pm. Closed Sunday.

The girl at the desk in the gym will collect the charge for use of the court. When I am there this morning, I will ask what the charge is.

The price is $10 US per hour for the courts and $30 US per hour for the gym.
Hopefully that means $5 US per person per hour for singles.

this is what it used to be 2 yrs ago to give you a basic idea

there is also the loase racketball club in costambar for another option.

I attend the gym regularly but don't play squash. I think they rent racquets but don't know if there is a surcharge for the courts. I don't think there is but will inquire for you. The monthly rate for the gym is 1000 pesos so if there isn't a surcharge I would recommend paying the monthly fee and you should be good to go.

Current Prices

Got this information from the gym 15 minutes ago. Prices are for non-members of the gym:

To use a court (there are 2):

$900 - Use of court for one hour, plus use of the racquetes and balls.

$600 - Use of court for one hour if players have own racquetes and balls.

To use the machines and free weights:

RD$150 per day if pay on a daily basis.

RD$500 per week if pay on a weekly basis.

Gym is open 6 days a week until 8 or 8:30 pm on weekdays, except between hours of 1-3 pm. Saturdays the gym closes at 1 pm.

If you only want to use the court, you do not need to pay for the use of the machines and free weights, just the court.

Can anyone compare racquetball to squash for me as far as if the workout is similar?
I used to play a lot of racquetball (and tennis before that), but only tried squash once a very long time ago.

I am interested in hearing from anyone that has played both sports to see how they compare as a workout.

I don't play either, but I asked this the other day from people who I was told were playing squash. They told me the squash ball is soft and doesn't bounce like the racquetball and the racquete is different.

Both games are really completely different. The only similarities are that they are both played with a racquet and ball. The racquets are different, the balls are different, the court is different, scoring is different.
I would say the major difference is in the ball. The racquetball is much bigger and made of very elastic rubber. This means it bounces significantly faster. The squash ball dies very quickly off the wall which means you have to be there. Both games are a lot of fun, though I prefer squash.

I've only played raquetball a couple of times a long time ago. I couldn't get the hang of it because I was accustomed to squash. In squash you have to go chase or go get the ball. In raquetball you more or less wait for the ball to bounce around and then come to you; the ball has a lot of bounces in it and my buddies would say to wait somehwere in the centre of the court. I kept trying to chase it and of course could never catch up to it.

I don't know if one has more of a workout effect than the other. When I used to play at a club that had both courts I would see the raquetball players covered in sweat just as much as the squash players.

thanks Ken. $600 for an hour just to practise seems a little steep, but I think I'll pack my raquet anyway just in case I feel the urge, or if I can find a partner to play. By the way I am not that good a player in that I need to keep pracitising in order to stay at top level, more like I need to practise things like my backhand (which sucks), so if anyone wants to meet up for a game during the first 2 weeks in March let me know.

Now, are there are regular group of squash players in Sosua?

Talk with Pascual at the gym. He knows who the players are. Some months ago he organized a tournament and is talking about organizing another. The courts are not used much when I am at the gym, but I only go in the morning. Likely there is more use later in the day since more people are available.

Westcan, I have seen the girl who works in the gym in the morning playing with people who did not have a partner. See if you can get a game with her. She works the morning shift only, until 1 pm, Monday-Friday.

Just to add to that, if you are member, court fee is $300 per hour, so if you intend to play a few times there are savings to be had in becoming a member.

ok, made it to Sosua, went to the Casino and Gym to check it out. Looks like a decent setup. I am going to play a bit, but yes it will cost 600 pesos to rent the court.
Anyone out there want to play a game, early morning or early evening? I could also play one of the people who work there, but they will charge me for that, so that is a last resort for me.
Give me a PM if so.

Very interesting post for us as we both play squash but never expected there to be courts in the Sosua area where we have purchased our house. Wish we were in town then as I would have been happy to play.
I have played both squash and raquetball (and tennis too) and squash is the most exercise aerobically, Tennis is the hardest to learn to play well and raquetball is the easiest game of the three to learn. Never play raquetball anymore as squash is a much better game to me. Still love tennis too.
Have a great time in sunny Sosua. Wish we were there now!

well, the vacation is over :-(

Made it to the squash courts and gym and played an hour against Mack, from this board. Pretty decent courts, with wood floors, glass back wall, and air conditioning. Ceiling is a bit low but this only bothered Mack, as one of his favorite shots is the high lob.
Friendly staff, and looks like there are quite a few regular players. I'll be bringing my raquet again next trip.

Yea westcan, Thanks again for the game. The low ceiling was a problem for me it's right on the high front wall foul line. I'll have to practice the same shot from a lower point on the wall. I'll bring my own racquet next winter.
Mack.
