Hi Guys,

I have a question:

are there any ATM's in DR that spit out American dollars or is always dominican money?

Fireguy: Some time ago, there were ATM's in Argentina (year 2000-something) that dispensed US dollars (and believe it or not, the amount was deducted from checking/credit account 1:1).
I think Citibank was one of those ... so it is a legitimate question.

To the OP: No, no US dollars ATMs or Cash Advances in the DR. The casinos MIGHT (stress MIGHT) do cash advance and give you USD chips, which you can then cash in ...

yea but rubio at that time, the Argentina Peso was pegged to the dollar, so there was no difference. When the currency was allowed to float was when Argentina collapsed. I remember that well because anyone with a visa wound up on Miami Beach.

When I was in Uruguay (sept 2008) the ATMs dispensed USD, and the UR peso is far from pegged to USD.

I also know there used to be ATMs in Canada which dispensed both $US or $CAD (they were from ING Direct and were located inside some Canadian Tire stores) but they have been gone for almost ten years.

As interesting as these tidbits about ATMs in Argentina, Uruguay and Canada are - none have anything to do with the answer to the OP's question.

If you live in the DR, and want to get dollars, the simple answer is a casa de cambio. In fact, the only question I ever get at my casas de cambio is "Pesos or dollars?"

At two of the three casas I go to, I get dollars for free in return for my US check. At the third, they charge me 1% of the amount to give me dollars.

Not really sure, but possibly, unfamiliarity and insecurity with $RD pesos.

you still need pesos to buy ,eat,drink,etc.....or you will really get the shaft if trying to spend dollars instead....do you think a dominican in the us or anywhere can walk up to a store and spend pesos!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you will try to use dollars, they will accept them, but at a worse exchange rate. Big places might take them at 35:1 (current rate is 36,2 : 1) and small stores/places might take them at 30:1. So you are really better off exchanging dollars into pesos.

This is a very legitimate question as most of the ATM in Costa Rica as of 10 days ago dispense USD. Would be fabulous if it was done here
