Let's Fly Together

We are proud to share some exciting news with you.

This morning, Continental announced that we have signed a definitive merger agreement with United Airlines and together, we plan to create a truly global airline. This combination is a merger of equals bringing together the best of both organizations and cultures to create a world-class airline with tremendous and enduring strengths.

Of particular interest to you, the combination creates the industry?s leading loyalty program offering the things you value most ? recognition, upgrades and priority airport services ? consistently delivered across a much broader network with an unparalleled global reach.

Since our transition to Star Alliance last year, we?ve worked closely with United and are confident this combination will build upon the partnership we already have in place.

We will keep you informed throughout the planned integration process. Please visit unitedcontinentalmerger.com, our dedicated joint merger website, for detailed information about today?s announcement.

On behalf of Jeff Smisek and the entire Continental team, thank you for being a loyal OnePass Elite member. We look forward to welcoming you aboard your next flight.

Yuk. Continental is hands down the best overall of the US legacy airlines and now it will be gone. Like the Delta NWA merger to form what is now the world's largest airline,(though with this merger United will assume that role) the worst attributes are taken from each carrier and results in an overall inferior product. This will leave the US with 3 mega carriers (Delta, United, and American) and US Airways (who still can't figure out if it's a LCC or a full service airline), and the rest of the LCC carriers.

United doesn't serve the D.R. and Continental has cut or reduced service to the country. (closed Santiago) The word is that the new airline will be shedding 155 airplanes. (probably the airbus a/c) Doesn't bode well for improved service from the new entity. Soon it will be all lowcost carriers from north america. Say goodby to your comfy first class seat unless you connect with AA out of MIA.

A bad news for American travellers to DR. Less companies means less competition, less choice and options, more monopoly and higher rip-off prices. United is known as one of the greediest.

For many Americans this merge will mean " Good bye Dominicana! Hello Cancun!"

Another blow to the tourism in this country.

Why would they shed the Airbus aircraft?? The Airbus A320 has been proven to be a winner economically to a lot of airlines all over the world.

The combined carrier won't need all the airplanes from both companies. One of their goals is to reduce capacity and thereby drive prices up. Continental has an all Boeing fleet and Uniteds is mostly Boeing. By getting rid of the airbuses which is the smallest fleet type you get a reduction in maintenance costs. (you only need to stock Boeing spares and get Boeing maintenance training) Of course, a lot depends on what the dollar does vs the euro but if you can get all the different size airplanes you need from just one manufacturer you are going to reduce your costs. Right now the combined fleet is something like 600 Boeing and 150 Airbus.

Good point. That is one of the ways that Westjet has become the best airline in Canada, by keeping their fleet to only one (maybe 2 just recently) types of aircraft. Much smaller cost for parts inventory and easy to swing a new plane to a flight that develops problems. Of course there is also that bit where they dedicate themselves to making customers happy campers.
