egads!!

Wow!! there goes my big plan to drive around and shop in Puerto Rico on vacation from the DR. Do you know if this is permanent (ie. did not make $)? I was under the impression that the ferry was very popular and saw a lot of use. Thanks

Never heard of someone taking a car from Dr to PR as they cost three time more in DR because all tax fees to entry the country.

You can rent a car for about the same rates as in Sto Dgo, at $40 a day or so. Unless I'm mistaken, the cost to take your car across on the ferry was about US$250.

The ferry is no longer operating.

I already knew about this and was wondering the other day when I saw a car with Puerto Rico license plates.

I wonder what happens when his time limit is up or was up.
Kinda hard to take it back with no more ferry operating.

How many got stuck in that situation.
Shipping via regular transport might be quite expensive.

The ferry was never profitable and was a losing deal anyway. 12 hours by water or 30 minutes by plane?

I meant profitable as in a time management exercise. You dont get to see much as it moves at night, it takes 12 hours and then you arrive at a commercial port in SDQ not a passenger terminal. You re better off riding the crop duster American Eagle and getting here in half an hour to start your vacation. And also, it wouldnt be worth to send your car here, pay all those taxes get all the insurances and then try to send the car back to PR when you re done.

Many brought there car here to drive while visiting the DR.
I thought I heard they had about a 30 day limit to go back.

The ferry made money also on a "time" long trip because people would spend money (Food, drinks, casino), it's like a party cruise for many people. They also rented cabins for those that did not want to sleep in the chairs. Not to mention the fee for transporting the car back and forth.

The price of that "Crop Duster American Eagle" is VERY expensive compared to the cost of the ferry.

I just read in the papers that the original company just sold both of the ferry's to some other firm based out of PR. Who knows if it will be back in operation or not. for the time being no.

possibly

"Dominican Today" mentioned about a week ago that there are ongoing talks to return the ferry to service. How long will that take is anybody's guess but its a positive note. I like taking my own car to shop and drive around the island. Keeping my fingers crossed.

No sure thing as yet.

There is now a roll-on-roll-off cargo vessel operating a couple of times a week between SD and PR, you should be able to ship your car on that. If you are desperate to have a car, as already said, the best bet is flying and hiring.

If you were planning to fill your truck with goodies and then drive it back - it won't fly ;-)

Puerto Rico is a very nice, especially compared to the DR. PR feels like paradise after spending time on Hispanola. Bitch to get there though, I think currently only American Eagle flys from Punta Cana to DR and its usually $350 or more round trip. Horrible.

How much would it cost to trasport a 2000 SUV to Puerto Rico from the DR, and pay the taxes and fees to legalize it there. No plans to return it to the DR. We have american citizenships. Car is worth about $10,000.

Hooray!!!

The Puerto Rico - DR ferry returns this March. 8 hours one way and 12 hours return (currents). $169 - $189. Longer trip costs more. Nice to have this service back and be able to go to PR and shop. All this is according to DR Today.
