Casitas and Spiny Lobsters

Does anyone know if the local fishermen build shelters for lobsters(casitas) down there? They are typically made from cinder blocks and pieces of tin roof, but they also sometimes use old car hoods or anything else that will last a while in the water.

They are illegal in Florida because they create piles of "junk" in the water and they think that it makes it too easy to over-harvest the lobsters, but it is legal in the Bahamas and some other places.

I think the shelters have a net benefit since it reduces the incentive to fish on the coral reefs and that providing shelter also protects the lobsters from natural predators. However, there should be some common sense used in what materials the shelters are made from. They are used extensively in Cuba, where they are like small concrete garages and the fishermen use large government boats to collect the lobsters.

Basically, you put some cinderblocks in an area where there are lobsters, put a sheet of roofing on top, then use more cinderblocks to weigh the thing down. Some guy in Florida was recently busted with over 6000 lobster tails in his freezer that he had gotten from the casitas he had placed. He was sentenced to a year in jail and his lobsters were sold at auction.

If you just put a cinderblock in the water, you can sometimes find those big crabs inside one of the holes.

Pretty interesting, do not know for sure if this method is used in the DR...(would not be surprised)....as it is no big secret......

Wow, thanks for the link. The larvae collectors are really key and are sometimes called "dogs" The larvae are almost clear planktonic critters that do not look like lobsters all.

The cinderblock-only systems are used for juvenilles. There is a HUGE die off from the juvenilles to adults so providing shelter for them can have a big effect on adult populations. It's something the ReefBall people are working on.

The whole minimum size thing for harvesting does little to affect the amount of juvenilles in the area. The larvae stage lasts for over a year so with currents, they are more likely to end up several hundred miles away from where they were hatched.

I was thinking that stacked wooden shipping pallets would be good for the casitas covered with 4" cinder blocks. How high you stack the pallets would depend on the expected currents in the area. They are social critters...

There is a prob with Dominican boats poaching in the Turks and Caicos. They hire Haitian divers with weights to get the lobsters with an air-line and they can dive deeper and longer than the locals. The thing is, if they are caught, the boats are confiscated. This can lead to the people up above cutting the airline to the guys under the water so they can get away faster. This is what I heard at least when I was in South Caicos.

That's how they do it in Bermuda, but it often ends up being swept away in storm currents. There is some show on it out there now about ppl poaching the cinder block, tin roof casitas.

Those interested in visiting a well-run underwater preservation project, should visit Punta Cana Ecological Foundation in Punta Cana. Also book a diving tour in Sosua, where an underwater marine park has been built.

The main source of lobsters eaten here is probably Pedernales, in the southwest.

Lorenzillos will be breeding lobsters onsite for sale at the new restaurant in Down Town Punta Cana soon.
