Hola All,

My question is can I extend my tourist visa so my Canadian driving licence could be valid for driving and especially insurance?

If so where and how long and how much should I pay.

I have lived in the DR for almost 20 years

I have never had a visa I didn't overstay. You can buy car ins. without any "papers".

Your international drivers license is not valid once your tourist visa has expired, without a valid drivers license the insurance company is not likely to pay out in case of an accident.

Remember all accidents are YOUR fault.

What about a Dominican born US Citizen who has a cedula but is driving with a US license? No visa or tourist card applicable. Is the US drivers license a problem in case of an accident?

Same would go for a legal resident!!!
no visa no tourist card, does have a cedula

Plus I think you can go down to immigration and extend your tourist card up to a year I believe, therefore the international license would still be good.

GREAT idea wait for Guzman.

And I believe a Dominician Citizen would need the same that was my point.

I don't believe there are going to be in fine points when it comes to insurance coverage. What ever your going to have to be legal.

So either a Dominican Citizen or a Dominican Resident will need a Dominican License, a US or European license is not going to do either of them much good after 90 days.

Question was is the international license legal as long as they still have a valid tourist card. This would include an extended tourist card I would think.

UPDATE ON Prorroga

PRORROGA-----EXTEND TOURIST VISA

I finally went thru the whole process. Close to the end of the first 30 days in DR. you can go to migration in SD. You go to cage #2 (Extranjeria) on the first floor with your passport. There you have to pay RD800 and can extend your tourist visa for an additional 3 months. If you want for more months you must return around the end of your prorroga and pay RD800 for an additional 3 months.
Note that the second time you must have your passport and a copy of your expire prorroga, you can make a photo copy at the reception area RD5. Make sure to have the photo copy before getting inline at cage #2.

Therefore this way you are a legal tourist but this is more costly than paying the fine when leaving
DR.Prorroga RD800 for 3months
Fine RD800 for up to close to 1 year I think?

the difference between the paying of the usual Fee for extending Your Visitor Visa and a few Pesos less of s Fine when leaving the country without extending the Visa during the stay is simple:
Who extends His/her Visa on Time is a Legal Visitor with a Legal Immigrations staus during the Time of His/her stay in the Dr, allowed to drive a Car, all Medical Insurances etc are Valid, while the Visitor who just let His/her Visa expire and waits to pay the simple Fine upon Departure is living here on a Illegal Immigrations Status, NOT covered by any Insurance(NO foreign Nor Local Medic Insurance applies for a Traveller with an Illegal Immigrations Status, at all countries around the globe, so if you do not plan to keep your papers in order to save a few bucks, no need to bother to pay anything for any medic insurance or car insurance etc etc, as they anuways would not be Valid anything) and of course Your foreign drivers license will not be valid neither, along with many other thingies travellers bring/pay for, b'c they always in the fine print depend on Your Immigrations Status, in Any Country of the Globe.
a simple and often actual example:
You rent a Car,
You have a Intl/whatso ever Drivers License,
You pay for Full Coverage Insurance(with CC or cash right here),
Your Visitor Visa expired by 1 simple Minute,
You have NO INSURANCE due NO VALID Drivers Licence due NO Legal Immigrations status.

and other even more common simple example by experience:
Your Visa expired by 1 Minute,
You have a great and fully covering Travel Insurance,
You have an accident or Health prob a minute after Your Visa Expired,
YOU are a Illegal Allien by Immigrations Status,
Your Insurance will deny Your coverage, any Coverage,
due that NO Hospital in this Country will accept You for any kinda treatment.

aside of such unimportand lil thingies,
stay and pay your fine at the airport when you leave the country,
and all is just fine

Happy Travels

Mike

1.La Mariposa,
I tried to extend more than 3 months and they told me to come back after 3 months or apply for residence.

I wished I was ablle to get longer time.

2. Mikefisher---- Your right on everycount, If you want to be legal you have to keep your paper work in order and avoid any complication in the futur.
