The fight will be held in Sosua.

The headliner is Javier Fortuna. Others include Claudio Marrero and Juan Carlos Payano who won a gold medal in Pan American Games. All the fighters listed on the poster seem to be Dominican.

I checked on tickets today but they haven't been printed. Right now they are working on the big Halloween affair for tomorrow night.

However, ticket prices are as indicated in my first post: RD$2500 VIP, RD$2000 first row, RD$1000 general admission.

Starting time is 7:30 pm

I'm definitely going and looking forward to it. I enjoy watching fights on TV, but have never attended one.

The tickets are now printed but there has been a change in price. Ticket prices are RD$2500 for the front row and RD$1000 and RD$500. I asked what the difference was between RD$1000 and RD$500, but didn't get a clear answer.

I bought my ticket from the office of the Casino marketing director 809-571-4075. I'm sure they will be on sale elsewhere, but have no info on that.

Updated Information

New signs are being put up today with new prices.: VIP RD$2500, primer fila RD$1000 and general admission RD$500

This morning I met Mike Duzant, the New Yorker in charge of boxing development for the casino. He explained that VIP will have a table, like at first fight here, and that the first 5 rows closest to the ring will be VIP. With the RD$1000, you are seated in a section starting with row 6. General admission will be behind that section.

He said there will be much better organization at this fight than at the first. When you enter the auditorium, your ticket will be torn in half. You can get back in with your stub if you go out to use the bathroom or have a smoke, but if you leave the building you will not be allowed back. He said that last time a big problem was caused because people could go out and come back, which enabled people inside to throw their ticket down to somebody outside.

He knows there were a lot of problems with crowd handling last time and thinks this time it will be much better.

I went to the boxing event last night, my first time watching boxing other than on TV.

Advertised start time was 7:30, first match started at 8:50 pm. Since that seemed to be expected by many there, something to remember if I go again.

Not a large crowd. Lots of empty seats.

First several bouts were full of action, at least on part of one boxer, and didn't last more than a couple of rounds with KO or TKO the reason for all but one. That one was stopped and the boxer who was clearly behind on points was declared the winner because the referee was frustrated by his inability to get the boxer, who was winning, from doing things that the ref felt were not sportsmanlike. Lots of booing from the audience as well as lots of cheers for the loser when he walked through the audience.

Then we had some bouts that raised a lot of eyebrows. Fighters going just one round then taking off the gloves even though no visible damage aand even though the fighters seemed peppy enough. Particullarly the one who, as he passed the crowd, was asked what the problem was and the fighter, with a smile, said "cansado". Based on the one round, he seemed to be at least equal to the other fighter, if not better.

Then there was the bout with one of the fighters a local (Sosua/POP) young man. Lots of cheering when he was introduced. Lots of punches thrown by both boxers in first round, though the other boxer seemed to be the better of the two. Then, hit by a punch from the local, he went down to his knees and stayed there until he was counted out. Consensus among spectators around me was that the fix was in. This was reinforced when the losing boxer was seen in very heated argument with his trainer, or whoever was in this corner. It was clear he was unhappy about having to stop fighting. People around me wondered who was paid and how much.

He was followed by a bout that included his brother. He too, was the winner, but was the better of the two fighters. Lots of cheering for him. At one point the Ref had to temporarily halt the fight and shoo who I think were his mother and sister away from the side of the ring.

The biggest cheers of the night were for the girls who walked around the ring between rounds holding up a sign with round number. Young, good looking, well built, short tight dress, high heels. They were crowd pleasers. Looking at them, you didn't mind that sometimes they had the wrong number on the sign. For example, in one of the fights, if you believed the numbers they had round 3 before round 2.

Hopefully some other posters also were there. I'll be interested in their take on the fights.

All in all, it was an interesting and entertaining evening with enough action to make it interesting, as well as incidents like what looked like taking a dive to give you something to talk about with people who were not there.

For those of you who want to take photos at a boxing event, be aware that unless you have a fast lens that is good in low light you won't get much. I ordered a 50 mm f1/8 from Amazon because it is a fast lens that is good in low light, according to the reviews and evaluations I read. Also, I saw it mentioned in some of the stuff I read when researching how to take boxing photos. But while still in the first bout, I got a notice saying there was a problem in communication between lens and camera, clean contacts on lens. I wiped off contacts, put camera back together and resumed shooting. But almost immediately another notice, and soon after a 3, and then the camera stopped working. So I had to use my basic f4-5.6 lens and none of those photos turned out. Looks like they were taken at midnight on a very dark night.

Fortunately Amazon has a good return policy and my new lens is going back.

San Pedro de Macoris on 27th

For those on the South coast who are interested, they made several announcements last night that there will be fights at San Pedro de Macoris on the 27th

I should have mentioned that I left at midnight (before my coach turned into a pumpkin) with one or more fights still to go. Somebody else will have to report if anything of interest happened at them.

I was there also and you gave a great description of the night, Ken. It was nothing like the first event there, in March. That one had professional fighters, ESPN2 camera crew, Feliz Diaz - the Dominican Olympic medalist, Roberto Duran as host, an absolutely packed house, one or two heavyweight bouts, etc.

This one felt like a bad golden gloves tournament. About half the fights ended more or less because one of the fighters quit. At least one, as Ken pointed out...the fight with the first of the two brothers, seemed obviously fixed. There was only one more fight after the second brother won his fight, and it was a decent one, I think one of the fighters was another Dominican star...a silver medalist from the Pan American games maybe...There were 12 bouts in all, all the fighters were 150 lbs. and under.

For 500 pesos, I would go again, but it would be a shame if they don't step up their game....and the quality of the talent...

BTW, Felix Diaz is scheduled to fight at the event in SPM on the 27th Ken mentioned....

Completely Ridiculous

I went to the fights Saturday night at Sosua Bay and could not believe what garbage they had the nerve to present as professional boxing. When they had the boxing there in March it was an excellent show, well organized with good professional fighters from the DR, US, Russia, Panama, Puerto Rico, etc. Then in August they moved the fights to Puerto Plata and they could not even sell 25% of the tickets but at least they still had decent fighters.

Saturday night's presentation was a complete joke, the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen when it comes to boxing matches. The quality of the fighters was horrible, completely unorganized presentation. It's a shame because they put on such a great show in March and even though practically nobody showed up in Puerto Plata in August it was also well done. Unfortunately this time the event was not organized by the same promoters. If they have any hope of continuing presenting boxing here they better get there act together. I'm really disappointed in something that started out so great in March and now turned to total garbage. Hopefully if they do put on boxing in the future they will organize and promote the event professionally. Unfortunately this time they didn't.

I'm sure those who were there will agree the girls who carried the number signs between rounds were the best performers of the night.
