The monetary and supply donations from the people of Canada (and elsewhere) are certainly appreciated by people in Haiti..as are the pledges from the governments across the globe.

HOWEVER.....more efficient use of the funds allocated by these governments would be to take the money.....contract out the work to companies from said country....deduct the amount for labor and materials...and BUILD the facilities themselves...and hire a person from said country to run it and hire a local staff.

That way , every single dollar is accounted for....you stimulate the economy of said country, you employ your own countrymen....and the plans ACTUALLY come to life.

The Chinese make arrangements with countries in Africa where, instead of aid....they make deals to extract raw materials...and build up the infrastructure needed to so themselves. That way there is less red tape, schedules are kept......the roads, buildings, etc get built to the standards expected, and there is no pretense involved....or middlemen, officials or organizations to slice up the money.

If the Haitian government would release aid from the ports without forcing the donors to pay fees, things would probably move ahead much faster.

Not sure about your example, they do everything to serve their own interest. It's really never been a substitute for aid (as far as I know). But it is true that when they work on a construction project, things go a loooooooot faster.

In this situation, imagine the construction of these clinics and hospitals are being goals of the Canadian gov.(their interests)

Rather than donating money to an alphabet soup organization for funds to build said things....it would actually be more efficient use of the money to build the projects themselves.

What I meant about China is, instead of "aid" which time after time proves to do little to benefit poor countries...Chinese make business arrangements that serve their interests but that can serve long term interests of the other country as well. It's ultimately of benefit to the "host" country in ways that millions of dollars of aid or donations never will be.

correct. But since I'm Haitian...I know that the chances of that happening are slim to none.

Effective people learn to not dwell on ifs...and accept reality for what it is....and find ways to circumvent unfortunate truths. That's why immigrants from some of the poorest, worst run countries in the world thrive in other countries.Resilience and creativity.

Thanks for pointing out that hypothetical situation though
