Blue MAll 3New Movie theaters

I was thrilled to find that Blue Mall has three theaters which are NOT playing the six films that ALL the other theaters....

Not that they are playing GREAT movies...

I does seem that they import whatever... without any regard to quality.. and do not check the reviews much..

Ojala that they would import some of the GREAT movies that are available!

El IMPERIO no es tonto
We have an agreement with hollywood companies, and have to show every movie they send. for every good quality movie we have to show 5-6-7 pop corn movie.
And thats not all, We have a very minimal quota of foreing film that they permit to show. Thats the reason because great european movies like Le Concert, I am love, A Prophet, and some great independet films like Winter Bone, etc, never show here. You have to wait for Film Festivals or go to Fine Arts.
There is another great Film Review Site. I like it better The Internet Movie Database (IMDb)

what is Fine Arts? Do you mean Cinemateca ? or the occassional film that is shown at the Belle Vista?

Fine Arts is a complex of theathers in Novocentro (Lope de Vega ave.) they just show arts film. and independent films. Its, the best place to watch a good movie in Santo Domingo. Plus, the audience is very different than the one in regular movie theathers.

No DRCAFTA involved.
This is normal in any business. if you want to show the Class A movie, you have to buy also the class B and C.

just saw Black Swan at the matinee

great film

and what a great theater! We were the only ones at the showing... which is very deluxe... And they have very cushy leather seats

unlike Blue Mall which had the sour cooking smells of the ubiquitous food court infusing the entire Mall.. yeuch...

but I will be a frequent attender at NovoCentro...

which has a lovely Italian cafe,, with gelatos and salad and pasta..

and some very nice shops for the narcotrafficantas et al, with a pair of pants priced at$300 US!

But they have only been open for 7 months so it is not as if I am completely behind the times.

So glad that I posted here.

Well it did look good... the new theaters at Blue Mall (which has these incredible lounge chairs in their "top" theater but charges a whopping 500 pesos or more for them... and keeps it cold enough for a full house despite having only three or four people in it..

But alas.. both NovoCentro and Blue Mall are now showing US films dubbed in Spanish. Anyone who really loves movies knows that you do not really get the full experience in a dubbed film. Many times the translation is just WRONG.. and many times the words just do not fit the lip synchs..

inferior..

and... since the movie theaters here do not seem to get the films in the theaters before the duplicates hit the streets at 20 to 100 pesos...

does not bode well for the future of high end movies here.

That sound strange. have you seen any movies dubbed to Spanish recently? Normally, only movies for children are dubbed to Spanish. the reason is that children of some ages can not read subtitles fast.
But thats true, I had seem some movies dubbed to Spanish in Spain and really it?s not the same.

I would venture a guess that the majority of folks who are going to patronize these theaters speak English well enough to follow a movie

or have enough respect for the genre not to have it mangled with dubbing

Well, this is new to me. I do not think this will last long. Dominicans does not like to see movies dubbed. We dont even understand the Spanish accent.

I watch Los Ojos de Julia at home , and had to use the spanish subtitles.
