My question: Is the economy in SD getting better or dominican are just crazy with party?
and thats not all.
Duran Duran is scheduled to play in Chavon, April 30th and Don Omar, also in Chavon , April 23rd.

Yes, in Altos de Chavon. get your ticket soon. last time they were here they sold it quickly and it was a great show.

I'm really surprised they have any following at all in the Republic. Can't imagine who they attract, age group n what have you. I grew up with them but can't imagine they were ever big in the republic. How many does the venue hold?

They were maybe the most popular band here in the 80?s.
The average age last time they were here was 30. So, now will be 40.
The crowd will be the midlle upper class dominicans and many foreigners, most of them from Casa de Campo and Santo Domingo. tickets prices are 40-135dlls.

Are not for the poor ex-path

Not to change the subject, but....

Do people really CHOOSE to come here, and then fall into the "poor" category? Why would you do that (not you specifically...)? Wouldn't your choice to move include the same standard of living you had previously?

Do "poor" people come here, and just remain in that status for the rest of their days?

I am much worse off in the Republic financially than I am in the modern world. My standard af quality living is no where near that of before. I specialise in an area that simply doesn't exist here, so I have to adapt and join the crap salary brigade with every other struggling mug out there.

Why is it so hard to comprehend that there is so much money floating around among the people in this country? If I am not making a mistake, i think the new suv's cost way more there than in USA yet we have more suv's in capital and santiago than many cities in USA. Now many people do you know in USA who drive a $125K dollars suv? here, we have every other guy. So why do you people become so surprised to even imagine if there is some money among certain groups of people? who do you think live in expensive houses in santiago and santo domingo? Who owns banks, supermarkets and other huge businesses in this island?
This is the problem: expats and tourists spend almost 100% of their time in the resort areas with poor dominicans, no wonder they have no clue as to what is going on in the real world. This is why so many people never agree with me on what I have to say. We live in 2 different islands (within the same iisland).
there are more rich and well-to-do dominicans here than you folks can imagine, oh and you will not find them in some puta bar in sosua or boca chica.
Duran duran have been here on sold out event previously and they will be sold out this time. Not all dominicans just listen to bachata or merengue. this is why marc anthony and chayanne will be sold out as well. People will not hesitate to pay 10,000 pesos / seat. Most likely, the vip is already sold out.
In my office, the worst paying clients are the expats and foreigners. they are always counting their pennies and have a million questions. The dominicans just pay up front and get on with the treatment. They get better quickly but the expat simply wants to self cure and save his money. hahahaha

A lot of what AZB said is true.. And also remember that many Dominicans return to the Island with money that they have made in businesses in the States..Many legal, and many not... I know many Dominicans in the Auto business in New York that do very well...and all have plans to return to the Dr when they Retire.

The thing is that there is so much poverty in the Republic, and that is what most tourist tend to see...

Dominicans are among the most welcome people in Malls, restaurants, car dealers, etc in South Florida. They know we spend more money than any other nationalities.

off topic,
Why people insist in call this country the Republic?
if you think Dominican Republic is too long, so you can call it
DR or Dom. Rep. or RD or Rep. Dom.

My surprise in Duran Duran has nothing to do with the cost of tickets, social class visiting or anything else, I have just never heard Duran Duran being played anywhere, seen a CD for sale nothing. Quite interesting to see who goes. I still think I've been stung at $257US for Shakira tickets though!
I think people who don't know money exists in the Republic havent spent any time in the cities, get sold the tourist sob story, stick to the rep sale and in reality never visit the country real. Sure we have poverty, slums and terrible crime but just like an other country does.
And so if you pop into the city you soon see your bucks that make you the big man in the tourist area, the dude with the wonga to wave, the guy that the peasants want to switch lives with doesn't hold any weight. You're demoted to average joe, join the queue like anyone else. Maybe thats why we don't have as many in the capital, who knows!

It used to be only rich people drove BMW's and Mercedes. Now days, financing is available for everyone with a reasonable income in the States, and (to my surprise) even here. So that guy driving a BMW next to you may or may not be rich. Kind of hard to tell...
