You are asking the wrong questions.

Lots of things influence the cost, not the least being if you have insurance and what insurance. If you have Dominican insurance, cost will be less than if you have insurance from your own country.

What you should really be looking into is what doctors and hospitals the insurance companies you are considering cover, and how much of the bill do you pay.

- one night in the hospital
depends on the city and the hospital, not to mention the fact that no one just spends a night in a hospital, why would they? if they stay there must be a reason so there will be costs of treatment/medicine involved as well

- doctor's appointment
depends on the city and the doctor, here in POP it's about 500 pesos or 100 with insurance for a normal i-think-i-have-a-flu doctor

- specialist's appointment
depends on the city and the specialist, some do not work with insurances anyways; expect to pay anything from few hundred to few thousand pesos

A friend paid 1, 000 dollars total for a night in hospital, operation, medications etc. for an emergency gall bladder removal.
Expect 200- 500 pesos for routine visit. Public hospital is less.

When I lived in POP and was hospitalized for a week (6 months' pregnant) the total bill came to around $800 USD or so at the end.

I'm Canadian, so paying for this stuff was a big deal to me! Not fair! :)

Look for the hidden costs and implications w your insurance, too. For example, I was pregnant but not married, and only learned at 6 months' in that due to me being single my insurance wouldn't cover as much (DR insurance)

Also, the hospital will give you a bill at the end for anything you request (I got charged for fresh towels, juice, bottled water, etc.)

When I was there it was less than 500 pesos for a routine consult with my doctor at Bournigal (public hospital).

Good luck! :)

Thank you!
I'm trying to figure out if the huge premiums for insurance subscribed back home are worth it vs DR insurance. Considering the only advantage is that they pay for evacuation if needed...

Centro Medico Bournigal in Puerto Plata is not a public hospital. There is a public hospital in POP, but not Bournigal.

You must not have been here for some time because prices without Dominican insurance for a routine consult now RD$1,000 or more. I pay my doctor at Bournigal RD$1,200.

But as I said in previous post this information is meaningless to somebody who is looking for Dominican insurance. What the OP needs to do is find out which insurance is preferred by the doctors and hospital that he/she plan to use when in Bavaro. Also, what percentage of the cost is paid by the company for what services.

1. You can buy medical evacuation insurance.
medical evacuation insurance - Google Search

2. In your shoes, I would look into getting Dominican insurance that will also cover you if hospitalized in the US, assuming that is where you are from, in the event you must be evacuated and evacuation insurance to pay for that.

My comments are in bold:

Perhaps, but everyone in Canada is paying dearly for your coverage in Canada for you and your countrymen. Were you not able to be reimbursed in Canada for what you paid in the DR?

Look for the hidden costs and implications w your insurance, too. For example, I was pregnant but not married, and only learned at 6 months' in that due to me being single my insurance wouldn't cover as much (DR insurance)

I had no idea that DR health insurance discriminated based upon marital status. That is not fair!.

I think Rob listed all his costs about his experience a while back, maybe that will help you see the worth of your insurance. I don't know where you'll find it or the name of the thread, and I'm crap with the search at the best of times.
