Now we know Leonel is not going to stand for President again, who comes next? I'd really like to see it be Margarita Cedeno. I have never read nor seen accusations of corruption, bribery nor other dishonesty about her. Many females have done or are doing a pretty good job of being the leading political figure. Witness Margaret Thatcher, Angela Merkel (spelling?). And I'm sure she wont offer free motor cycles nor throw food parcels out the window. Mind you as an ex-pat immigrant I have sadly no say in the matter.

They became a lot poorer after Leonel changed the rate of the pesos without lowering the prices.
The prices never go down, but the currency value does. That's the point.

I would hope for Danilo, but feels Papa is going stronger...
If Margarita gets the PLD nomination, Hippolito WILL defeat her... This is DR, not Germany or Iceland...

While I am not a giant fan of the PLD, the alternative is much worse. I like Danilo, but he has the charisma of a wet paper bag. La Primera Dama would just be a figure head and puppet. Dominguez Brito is also an interesting choice. Anybody who knows me knows that I think Candelier is who the country needs now but he is not running. Maybe a Danilo/Brito ticket or a Danilo/Margarita ticket. Not sure how the egos would play out with those. Also by keeping the PLD in power, all those folks who have had government jobs the last 8 years would keep them, and while effeciency and competency is not a strong attrubute, at least they have some idea of what they are doing. Imagine the chaos of 1000s of new government workers, good luck getting anything done in a government office.

For those who are getting excited about the idea of the exchange rate going up in a potential new Hippo government............be careful what you wish for. A big jump in the exchange rate is fools gold for expats. If your income is in Dollars (or Euros) you will get a temporary benefit. Then the prices go up too, which negates your gains and hits everyone living on pesos very hard. Of course, if the "Dominican price" goes up, you can imagine in hard times that the "Gringo price" goes up even more. Then when the exchange rate goes back down, as it did initially under Leonel, you end up with a net loss because the prices DO NOT go back down.

to tell you the truth i understand Danilo has no charisma BUT honestly we dont need a charismatic president we need a president that can give the dominican people what it needs. look at the last charismatic president Hippo, what did he do, nearly ran the country bankrupt. that is the problem today that dominicans can identify themselves with Hippo because of his charisma and his famous "azaroso" line but the man is a nimbwit and has no business being in politics. and get ready IF he does win there is going to be bigger problems in the DR. remember this is the man that Hugo Chavez has alot of issues with and to tell you the truth without Chavez and his petrol this country will be paralized. no fuel no nothing. so yes LLEGO PAPA and all that comes with it. God help us.

Zero chance. He didn't even get 1% last election despite flailing himself in front of every camera and journalist within a km. of him.

Moreno is clueless. He has no idea about economic matters. He's a socialist through and through who thinks money grows on trees.

Problem is, most people here do not use their brains when they vote.
They vote for a personality, color or who has just brought their cedula or given them a chicken.

I expect to see a large voter turnout...

PRD supporters, due to the jobs, payouts they would have been promised etc.
You would be surprised how low some people will go here to rally support or buy a vote.

PLD suporters, looking to retain their jobs etc. Plus if Margarita runs, she will get a huge amount of female votes.

As I have said before, the whole Margarita running has been planned for years.
Leonel and the 2 million signatures stunt was all smoke and mirrors to give the PLD time to organise, test the waters,
see what the PRD would do etc.

I would love to see her run against Hipolito, she wil bring his inner Chopo :)
She has no experience, only by osmosis, but I have no doubt the PLD PR machine and $$$ will steam roller the PRD with her.
Hopefully anyway, as another PRD government would be an absolute disaster for the Dominican Republic.

very well said Robert, that is another huge problem these parties buy votes and people's ignorance lets them be bought. i am praying that Hippo doesn't win cause if he does that will be the final nail in the coffin.

I didn't say that he would win, although I think that this time around he will garner a higher percentage of the vote. Unless the PLD candidate is Dominguez Brito, he'll get mine.

One thing that I'm sure of, is that there's a growing sentiment for a change from the traditional parties. There's a significant segment of the population that is sick of the thieves that have ruled the country. In my case, the entire PRD and every PLD candidate, except for the aforementioned Dominguez Brito, represent that band of thieves.

Oh, and I think that you're underestimating Moreno on his knowledge of the economy, and his philosophy on managing the country.

Maybe Moreno will quadruple his vote and get 4%.

Out of the entire voting population I doubt more than 15% are "sick" of thieves. Corrupt politicians are as much a part of the Dominican culture as Presidente and baseball are. Sad but true. It's the same every cycle: "Vote for me, I'll end corruption." OK. That's turned out well...

I disagree about Moreno's economic bona fides. When you string together all his "promises" for the use of gubmint funds and taxation he sounds like just another socialist promising something to all for purchasing votes with OPM.

I usta like the guy. But the more I learned, the more I find him a little pathetic and hollow. He'll say anything to get attention.

There is a reason he has little traction: no one wants to follow him. He's like one of those perennial candidates who becomes a caricature of himself but doesn't know it.
