Jellyfish is a great choice. Just back from a week in P.C. and went to Jelly twice. Capt'n Cook once. Had never been to either before. Both are "tourist" places, after all P.C. IS a tourist area, but Jelly is like a "normal" nice restaurant in the U.S.... except it sits on a beautiful beach. Capt'n sits on the beach too, but is much more a tourist "experience" -- even starting with the parking -- a random guy at the parking lot was going to escort us into Capt'n and "introduce" us to best person to wait on us, I politely declined with a friendly but firm "gracias, no". We were then seated at a table, drink orders taken, then another waiter came to take the drink orders again... then a guy "Rafael" dressed in shorts, t-shirt, sneakers, came and asked if our drink order was taken (third time, lol) ... introduced himself as the Maitre-d, told us to let him know if we needed anything. He did seem to be in charge at some level, but he also runs the adjacent gift shop... walks around with a sky high stack of cigar boxes trying to sell them, does visit the tables to socialize and check to make sure everything is good, and takes pics of you at your table which he will then make into a label for your very own brand on a bottle of Mamajuana.. for $25.. LOL. My wife ordered what the menu called "scallops, house style", but got "veal scallopini" - which tasted OK, but a disappointment since she wanted sea food. Still not sure if the translation problem was on the menu or by the waiter... but she did point to the item on the menu. I offered to send it back for her, but she declined. My Mahi-Mahi fillet was good though. Jellyfish's food was excellent all the way around, (a definite step above Captn Cook's) with some interesting twists. They have meat selections, but we only ordered sea food and chicken dishes. The sea bass with passion fruit/ginger sauce was excellent. Jelly's prices are a little high ... but actually the entres are a little less than what you'd expect given the quality and setting, ball park guess is an average of about $20 / includes one side. It's the appetizers and salads that are pretty pricey and boost the bill, they ARE however, excellent (the "roasted vegetable salad" was actually a hot dish of layered veggies topped with cheese... more like a small entre than a salad or appetizer, and the calimari might have been the best I ever had). Jelly pours a generous glass of very nice house wine for a very reasonable price. Captain Cook's prices were very reasonable for a tourist place, and includes a little appetizer of fried potatoes and cabbage salad (happily refilled if you want), sides, along with a small plate of fruit for dessert and a little Mamajuana to finish the meal -- $38 -- cheap. Bottom line - two very different experiences, each enjoyable in their own ways. Capt'n is cheap, fun, touristy, quirky... Kafkaesque, (my new favorite description of many things Dominican). Jelly is very nice, "normal", excellent service, reasonable (except for starters) --- MUCH more the romantic spot.
I haven't passed by in awhile. I would be sad if that were true.
