It is with great pleasure that we at B.T.B.C.F. announce we have now have a scholarship program.

In 2010 while touring a Dream School in Cabarete with my wife Nenita, Catharine, and Jon of Dream she suggested a scholarship. Well It's taken 18 months but it is now in place.

The scholarship winner is a young lady by the name of Katherine Sanchez. She graduated at the top of her class with grades of between 90 and 98 in her high school years. She was head and shoulders above all the other students, and was chosen by Catherine De Laura and Jon Wunderlich of The Dream Project.
They are in the paperwork process to register her at LA USAD Universidad Autonomo de Santo Domingo where she will be studying accounting. It is the oldest University in the Americas.
We have committed to $2,000.00 per year until she graduates in either a 3 or 4 year course.

Olive and I will have the opportunity to meet her next winter when we are in the POP area. We have asked that she keeps in contact with Catharine and Jon and copy us as she progresses in her studies.

I believe that this could be the start to something even larger as we grow as an organization.

So for those who were at this past weekends Fiesta in Cobourg Ontario, or those who participate in our online auction, or those who donate for the vacation Giveaway vouchers your donations will help this young lady get a great start in life, something that allot of children cannot even dream of. (No pun intended)

Regards, Chris Willott.

Dang, this thread breaks my heart.

There was a girl in my (really bad) English class for over 6 years. She was the youngest of 11 children, living in a barrio called Calijon de la Loma just outside of Cabarete. She got a late start in school (school was seen as a luxury by her parents, and buying the clothes and backpack that was required was not exactly in the budget for the 11th child).

She never missed a class. Helped out the other kids (she was the matriarch of the class). She always arrived in class with the (rather lame) homework I had assigned completed (I wouldn't have done it...it was lame). And when she got to her last year in high school she had to do 2 years of high school in the same year (I didn't really understand it, but apparently if you get a late start in school you can do a couple of years in the same year to catch up). She was in school all the time that last year, but would always get home in time to go to my lame English class.

We had been paying for her to go to the "real" English class for 5 years, along with a few others, and although the other kids came and went (the school had much higher standards than I had for my class, and they actually threw kids out if they didn't do their work), but this girl hung in there. And each year as we settled up with the owners of the school, they would go out of their way to mention how hard this girl worked, and how smart she was.

My girlfriend and I were so excited. She would have been the first of her siblings to go to college. We took her to a Dominican woman ?success story? recommended by the school to talk to her about college (she was amazing?another topic?but told her NOT to make the same mistakes that she had?wait to meet a man?wait to have children?that this would be her ticket out of poverty). I even opened a thread on DR1 to get some advice about how I could make this happen.

I didn?t make it back to the DR this year (first in 8 years), and I get this email from the school that she had stopped coming to school and was now pregnant. Oh, and a 14 year old that we had even higher hopes for was also pregnant. Actually 3 of the 4 girls (all under 16) were now pregnant. At first I was angry. Then just depressed. Totally depressed.

I TRULY don?t want to diminish your contribution. Or your objectives. It is just that I spent 8 years under the radar (I suspect most folks in Calijon thought I was a homeless guy as I walked down to my class every day?everyone in Calijon was dressed better than I was, and definitely noticed as I waved off the motoconco?s as I walked the 40 minutes back to my pretty low-end apartment in the sun\rain\etc) looking for a good investment, and I crapped out on all of my bets.

I sincerely hope you have better luck than I did (and if you stick with Jon and the Dream Project you just may succeed). I have moved on. I donated my moto and all the other stuff I had accumulated over the years to the school. I have no plans to return there. I honestly can?t justify investing one more nickel there. It seems to be a place to go if you want to consume, not a place to invest (whether it is in people, real estate, business, etc).

The summary is you are broken hearted. This is because you dress up like a homeless man to teach young girls a lame english class. You and the one you are sleeping with are also disappointed because some of the young girls you taught did as you did, not as you said. Then when they did not take your advice to delay male relationships, they were not aware of how to use contraceptives. Now you are bailing but you are hopeful for others behind you that are working hard and sticking with it. You are giving away your moto that you never used anyway because you walked to look like a homeless man. This all makes you angry and depressed. I am not sure why, maybe because your class was really bad (and so I assume really really boring). Maybe the young students were looking out the window during your class and that is the way the guys located them to unwrap. And you also lost your investment "stuff" that was in your pretty low end apartment so the next arrivals should only be consumers. Like your students perhaps a lot of people will be taking your advice under consideration before they move to your old barrio.

A follow up.

Received from Dream today.

Chris,

Good News!! Katherine registered today. There was a small problem with her documents, but we were able to get her registered in UTESA in Puerto Plata. Her documents issue should be all solved before next semester. She is super-excited. She took a pyschology/interests test today to determine what she should study, but she is interested in accounting. She starts classes next monday.

We will keep you updated. And I am asking her to write down some offer experiences to share with you.

Again thanks a lot. We are super-proud to be able to work with you all and make this a reality. This is what I was trying to say in the newsletter.

Tell whoever wishes to pay via paypal to log into their paypal account and make a payment to edinnb@gmail.com

Ed will get a confirmation email as soon as the transaction is approved, and He will forward me a copy of that email, and then send the money to our Treasurer.

Great, I sent an Email asking this info two weeks ago.

This is sad to me. I understand why you are discouraged. This has happened to me in the States with a young lady I took an interest in when I was much younger. I tried to encourage her, be a role model, etc. Counsel her.....but she was knocked up at 15 years old. By the age of 22, she had 3 children. She lost motivation (which is the biggest disappointment) and I lost hope. She called me last year, excited about a new job. The new job is at COOK OUT which is a fast food restaurant down here in the south.

Yeah. What can you do. Sigh. I would like to hear a good-old-fashioned success story though. Something that was deemed a success story at the time, and was still a success story 5 years later. In my opinion, success has a short shelf life on the north coast of the DR.

I wonder if the Dream Project keeps any stats on their kids that could be considered ?measurable results? (rather than antidotal stories of what might be possible) of their impact there. They have been there long enough where there should be some objective statistical data there.

Don?t get me wrong. I LOVE seeing those pictures of beautiful children holding those fancy plaques. What is a reasonable expectation for kids in their situation?

Maybe it is just a problem with my expectations.

It is a very good question about measurable results for programs like the DREAM Project. It is an area I have focused on since coming to DREAM. We absolutely track all students with reading and math scores from age 5 on. The pre-school students get additional evaluations 3 times a year on development skills like motor, kinesthetic, basics of reading and math, etc. Our annual report always includes quantitative data. The new Annual Report should be posted in the October Newsletter.

We have also done various other studies. One study compared our Montessori students to the public school students. Our kids are doing much better and we will continue to track them until they are finishing 8th grade(the oldest are 8 years old now) to make sure the increased skill levels are long-lasting. We have also done studies on the lifeskills curriculum called Deportes para la Vida that we implement in all youth programs. This curriculum works on healthy decision-making which is ultimately with higher academic skills what will stop some of the situations mentioned earlier in this blog. In particular, Katherine Sanchez, who was chosen for the Beyond the Beach Children's Foundation Scholarship, participated in a 300-hour+ Vocational Training course with DREAM this year. Her attendance and performance were outstanding. We know that there are no guarantees and we hope with BYB's help we can continue to support this amazing young person develop a meaningful career.

We are also investing in developing a data tracking system for DREAM through the web-based called salesforce, which will give us a lot of data at our fingertips day to day. It will be fully up and running in October.

I'm a data person, so I love working this way, and of course, USAID would never give us money like they have if we were not tracking students' progress.

If someone has specific questions please fell free to contact me at Catherine@dominicandream.org

Thanks,
