Linares in Cabarete. We bought a few a couple of years ago for our hotel. They may still carry them.

I think this is their phone number (809) 571-0272 -- Call them up to check before going.

Check the local paper's for used safes. Coastambar monthly and the other two local rags. BTW not a good Idea to have a safe in you're home, just got rid of mine and know of another two expats selling theirs.

Hello, Check out Price Smart in Santiago. I can't remember exactly what they had, (They mite not have programmables) however they usually are cheaper, and sometimes substantially so.

If you speak Spanish, Funcional on Beller St. in Santiago is one of the oldest importers of safes in the country. However, for a small one, I would bet best price would be Ochoa or PriceSmart.

THIS IS THE BEST ADVICE EVER! If you have a safe one way or another (cleaning lady etc) people will know and dream of the millions in gold that must be there. If you insist on buying a safe make sure that ALL of you and yours can open it quickly or there may be a very unpleasant conversation with some one who wants what is in it.

But doesn't the very existance of a safe still become a "thief magnet"?

ok, I just saw where this had to a be a "guest programable" safe. Thats a little different.

I like "secret hidden hiding places" over safes.

But I can't tell you about them, they're secret. (I might give out one if tortured or asked nicely)

That old thread talked about elderly people hiding money in books...... and sorting thru the whole bookshelf finding $100's of dollars

The same reason that I sold mine. I know of a person who was robbed at gunpoint and all he kept in it was his passport etc.
An empty safe could **** them off big time!

That thread made me change my mind about a safe in our house. Why ask for trouble? My husband's brother has a safe at his business - we leave all our important papers [land titles, etc] there. We don't bring any expensive jewelry there, and keep our $$ in the bank, and just withdraw what we need as we need it.

We tell our guests coming to visit all of that - and recommend they do the same. Of course, it's a different story if you're talking about rentals/hotel.

I have a few friends that have two safes. The easy one to find has a couple hundred dollars in it and a cheap watch and copies of some papers. The real one is well hidden. Install the well hidden one yourself.
