From today's Sosua News:

Last week the manager of the Latino bar / nightclub had the dark glass wall removed again from the street site of his bar. This allows people passing by to have look inside and the people at the bar can watch the street again and see what's happening outside. For some time now you can see that the tourist police (Politur) act more restraint than before.

In late June, a committee under the Ministry of Tourism of Santo Domingo and the Ministry of Health (Salud P?blico) visited Sos?a. During the inspection tour, the committee members were overwhelmed with complaints from the bar and restaurant owners. Moreover, the committee itself could also see that many bars and restaurants were closed and there was little clientele for those still in business. They decided to suspend their tour of inspection and to go in consultation with Mayor Ilana Neumann and the commander of the Politur. It is certainly true, they were very shocked by the impoverishment of Sos?a. After this Politur acted more restraint than before. Now that the Latino bar is restored again to its former glory we have another example of this more tolerant policy.

Is this the beginning of a resurgence in Sosua

I had swore I would not go back and haven,t been back since the big police crack down. Is it over, have the authorities come to realize that what they were doing was not good for buisness or tourism in Sosua. Have things truly changed because what I saw this summer left a bad reflection and I was not going back. I am still not going back until It is public knowlegde that the crack down is over. I recieved three tickets and visited bank popular twice on one visit because my rental was ticketed and towed, tickets for seat belt violations. The police prescence was overwelming girls scattering and begging to be escorted from club to club. It seemed very much like they didn't want me there and I had been coming for years regularly. I have since gone to Miami Beach, Vegas and Atlantic City I will not go back to Sosua until things are normal again.

It's good that you have been visiting other locations for your vacations, I have a feeling that Sosua doesn't miss you, when one leaves there are plenty of others to take his or her place.

The number of customers in bars and restaurants is down all over the North Coast. Big decrease in the number of tourists since the economy went south.

Ken , Seamonkey,
Actually July picked up a bit at POP with 26062 tourists , up from 22,364 in June with most of the rise coming from North America and UK. If you add Santiago (Cibao) in with 20,339 tourists , up from 16,066 in June mainly from US.
Totals July 46401 from June 38430 , a rise of 12% month on Month.
So perhaps the negative effects of the crackdown are wearing off!
Anyway Seamonkey, you can watch Classicos all day from where you sit!!

Only way to tell if your conclusion is valid is to compare previous years June/July increases. July may just be a busier tourism month than June every year. What is the comparison year to year?

Off topic, I know (sorry) but numbers from the UK aren't going to get any better when Thomson stop flights from London Gatwick to POP from December to March - supposedly the busiest time of the year!

Is that true? I know it is true for North American visitors but I always understood that the Easter and the summer months were peak times for UK visitors during school holidays.

With the balmy subtropical climate in the UK during Dec to March Brits don't have the same incentive as the North Americans wishing to escape from their severe winters.

Maybe I am wrong. Anyone have any ballpark figures?

This is not always true and is reflected in the local economies. It's possible a large number of recent Sosua tourist felt the same way as the poster, which in turn will hurt all local restaurants and bars. The final result being that, Yes, Sosua WILL miss him and all the other who chose not to return. A very short sighted comment.

Belmont – you make an interesting point ! For 2010 July POP came in with 28950 tourists , up from 27394 in June 2010 with most of the rise coming from North America, France , and Germans but with minus 1000 from UK. If you add Santiago (Cibao) in with 19738 tourists , up from 15262 in June 2010 the increase (4700 approx ) mainly from US.
Totals 2010 July 48688 from June 42656 , a rise of 14 % month on Month for June to July 2010.
Whilst the numbers for July 2011 are still 4.6% down on July 2010 it is an encouraging sign!
So the 20% increase in 2011 June to July versa 14% June to July for 2010 and the increase in mainly from the US suggest that the effects of the crackdown is wearing off !
So I say again that the negative effects of the crackdown are wearing off!

Glass or no Glass !

OLLY

PS Sorry for the delay but I have been enjoying a G&T with real lemons around the pool in this wonderful weather!

You have to compare July 2011 with July 2010, in order to see any trend in tourism. July 2011 POP arrivals (non-resident foreigners) are down 10% compared to July 2010. (26,067 compared to 28,950)

June 2011 arrivals (non-resident foreigners) at POP airport was 22,364 compared to 2010 - 27394, a decrease of 18%.

The numbers are from the Central Bank website.

Every July has been better than June of the same year, in the history of the arrival stats, for any tourism area airport in the DR, so its basically useless to compare July to June of the same year.

Nice numbers - and as to the source you are correct -but this year the difference is about 8000 more in July 2011 than June 2011. In 2010 the difference was only 6000 - so a bigger difference and the majority from USA.

We have not done the earlier years yet so I am not sure I agree with you!

Conchman,
You missed out Santiago ! Most of the tourist from there come to the north coast and some are even comming in through El Catey . You need to add those number in - certainly from Cidao !
