Hey guys,

I was just wondering if it is safe for a trip to Sosua alone if speaking minimal spanish for 8 days? How safe is it for a new traveler and also what would be some advice you would give to someone going alone? Thanks for your help.

Yes is fine, just stay away from Hash and suchlike and you should have fun. First trip, get into a A/I hotel and venture out, but return to the peace of mind of the hotel at night.

How about venturing out in the night to the clubs/bars in the area. Any issues there? How about hotels like Terra Linda and Sea Breeze as opposed to an all inclusive? I'm just trying to get a feel for what to expect. Thanks again for the help.

For most, the evenings are the best part about Sosua, you will have no issues, you will get a lot of attention from the girls in the bars and on the street, but don't get fall down arseholed and you will have as good a time as many many others who visit. Rarely does anything bad happen to anyone in Sosua who does not bring it on themselves. Go out, have a drink, meet some new friends, have a few girls and spend the days by the pool or on the beach.
Don't read to much into what you read or hear about Sosua, it tends to be scaremongering and over dramatic imaginations who go on and on about Sosua being this or that.
Hotels, well that is more for your peace of mind really, any hotel where you have security on the door and it is a respectable joint will be cool. There are less secure places around town, but many tend to change to these after several visits and are confident of the surroundings, have learned how to treat people and how to get rid of annoyances etc, without offending.

You will be fine, just avoid the sh1t or you may begin to smell, clingy smells are bad news and so for this reason I'd advise to not even bothering making friends with any of the natives wanting to do you a favor, never ever any good comes out of making friends with local girls or motoconchos. You will hear guys on here banging on about how they have so many local friends, a guy for this , a guy for that,,,, eventually it catches up on them and they get stung, somehow.

i'm a frequent terra linda visitor. here's a little presentation i did. these are some different views from my room around the hotel. what i left out (unfortunately) is the restaurant. it's very nice. the clubs and bars are a short walk up the street. security at night. no unescorted girls are alllowed on the hotel property. on the same street as Terra Linda you have Rocky's, Casa Valeria and New Garden.
please heed the advice of the posters here and your trip will be non-problematic....enjoy !!

I have not heard of anyone having any serious trouble in Sosua, so I think you will be safe. Also, many businesses there have someone that can speak English...but even if they don't you can get by fine. People are very friendly in Sosua...particularly the women. Standard things to do when traveling just about anywhere is don't flash a lot of cash, be cautious about strangers that want to help you (particularly if they point out some problems and also are selling you a solution), don't buy real estate on your first visit, don't leave valuables sitting around in your hotel room, get extra insurance on your rental car if you rent (don't rent a car), don't loan anyone money (even if they are poor and their family member has a terrible health or other problem) (spreading the cash in small amounts or gifts to amputees or wheelchair people is ok), don't let strangers use your laptop, don't freak out if you want to go back to downtown on a motoconcho and the driver takes you down a side road/long way, it may be because he can't go the wrong way along a one-way road, if some guys bark at you "change change" don't take it personally, don't eat at Baily's everyday, don't trip over me if I am lying in the gutter or shaking my tin can, don't wear those plaid shorts with a Hawaiin shirt partially unbuttoned (unless you have a really hairy chest and bling), don't expect people to obey the traffic laws, don't buy or use drugs, don't think you have found the love of your life and then start sending her money via western union when you get back home (unless you really want to).

You will be completely fine...

I hope by the time you read this message you have already been to Sosua and had a great time. It is nice little town and I love it. And, if you haven't been yet to the Sosua, I'm sure you'll love it. I think Sosua is safer than most places in the area. You should be find just.

If you don't speak Spanish, don't worry there are many people that speak English.
