The cost should be less than US1000 based on my investigation. What will kill you is what Aduanas will hit you for. Last time I called, they wanted you to come in person to SD to discuss the cost of of taxes.

Frito you would add about 40% import tax to the blue book value of your bike not on what you paid.

Holy cow! the tax is that high, huh? I got a Harley 2008 Screaming Eagle Dyna Glide that is probably worth $16,000 -- 20,000 Blue Book at present.....so let's see: at least $1,000 to ship it and at least $5,600 in taxes.......ouch........too cost prohibitive........probably ain't gonna happen then, unless I decide to move down permanently.............

I just inquired to customs to get my 2008 Harley Sporster 1200L from Calgary Canada to DR. $1800 for shipping with Air Canada (not too bad) but $7000 at customs. I paid $13,000. Aduanas also told me I could get that reduced by filing a moving permanent residence claim since I am a Dominican resident. However, for bikes and vehicles the exemption is only 40%. So Im still paying $4800 at aduanas.

In short, if you know anyone who wants to buy a bike in Canada there is one for sale in Calgary. Never been rode. Bought it 2 months before I made the permanent move to DR.

That's insane!!!! You can get the same bike here in Sosua for USD$ 13,000 as well.

The price of shipping plus another 40% of what Dominican customs values the vehicle at is a good rule of thumb for any motor vehicle you wish to import. Yes it is insane.

I never realized until today they sock you that hard with tariffs.....cheaper in the long run, i guess, to buy a vehicle in the DR that to try an import one..............

If you are bringing it in under the residency exemption, it almost makes sense.

Otherwise, no, just suck it up and buy one.

DR1- Bob's car was for sale here and appeared to be a pretty good deal
Can't 'member what happened to it.

If you use the residency exemption it is really worth it. I shipped a jeep cherokee from montreal to sdq in a container with personal belongings and some home stuff.

Normal taxes on that vehicle where 300k DOP. They charged me 40k.

Key here is to bring additional stuff: like new tvs, fridge, etc. Easy resell.

Can someone explain the residency exemption briefly for me???? It sounds like a onetime deal, when you move to the DR, permanently, for the first time. Thanks.............

Lots of threads on this. Full explanations are there.

Within 6 months of being granted residency, you are allowed to import personal belongings, including a vehicle.
The goods are tax free, the vehicle is discounted.

One time deal.

Also works if you're a local and went abroad to study or work and decided to return after two years. Again, one time deal.

If i had it to do again, I would 'residency' myself and my wife/partner at different times thereby getting a second chance at a container.

You learn the first time and could be really good at it the second time.
