From today's Sosua News:

Residents of the La Uni?n neighbourhood and users of the road between Los Castillos and the entrance of the airport, complain about the illegal motorcycles races on the road. Young people between 16 and 25 years old compete among themselves and bystanders can bet on the races.

The winners can earn prizes from 500 to 1000 pesos. But by their irresponsible behavior they put themselves and other road users in danger. The bikes can reach speeds of over 100 kilometers per hour. The underlying problem is that young people are unemployed and are really bored. These races are an exciting diversion for the youngsters and they can also earn money and fame. The commander of the National Police Reymundo de la Rosa Ogando, has in response to the many complaints and accidents, announced that the police takes strong action against the lawbreakers. There will now be regularly patrols on this section of the road.

Sounds like the races in Orlando in the middle of the night on the 408 and the beeline. The only difference maybe are the speeds are over 300 kmh and when they fall there are only pieces left behind.

Sounds exactly like what goes on at Puerto Plata's Malecon every Sunday afternoon.

Like early hot rodding in Southern California years ago. Young people souped up their cars and raced on the streets since there was no where else. After a time unused WW2 airports were turned into race circuits and the street problems diminished. If these kids had a place to go they would. Until then the best place is the highway. They have been doing this for quite some time. If anyone knows of an appropriate place where the kids could race it would solve the problem. I have little faith in the police doing much. We shall see. These kids are proud of their motos and want to show them off.

great smash, Gringo! Is that you? Not much left of a nice bike. Stunt riding is risky.

Just goes to show: young guys and wheels do stuff no matter what the culture.

Is there no Motocross on the Northcoast?
If they are into bikes and had somewhere to go and spectate under some kind of order it might take their minds off road racing on public highways.

motocross En Rep.Dominicana Jarabacoa 10-7-2011 6ta puntuables part 1 - YouTube

But as you will see at the 16minute marker on the film, you are always going to get dickhead spectators and accidents, even under relative control.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rO7MCEyZNLY

The motorcross is a great day out though, with or without casualties, spectator or competitor. I used to compete many years ago and I can tell you spectating at motorcross is as exhausting as competing, really good fun.
