Hello everyone, first time posting. Looks like this forum is a great resource.

We will be flying back home from SDQ in February. Since the flight is early in the morning we are looking to stay in a quiet hotel close to the airport. Any recommendations for hotels that are within a short early morning taxi ride to the airport?

Thanks,

Rick

Quality Inn or Boca Chica

There is a Quality Inn very close to the airport. Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic hotel near Las Americas International Airport - Quality Hotel, DO002 It usually costs $100-$120 US per night. It is part of an American chain and is very comfortable though expensive. If you were looking for something cheaper and were adventurous you could find a room for half that in Boca Chica, a 15 minute cab drive away. Use the search funtion for Boca Chica options. Welcome to DR1.

Early in the morning, traffic is not a problem. So it might be better to stay in Santo Domingo and ask the hotel to arrange for a taxi for you. A taxi from the colonial zone to the airport usually runs $40US. I usually tip extra for an early flight. Takes less than 30 minutes to get to the airport.

It takes about 10-15 minutes to the airport from Quality Inn because of the detour that has to be taken (first you must go towards Santo Domingo several kilometres, then U-turn in a tunnel, then head back towards the airport). In the early morning hours, better to just set off from Santo Domingo, because the hotel taxi at Quality Inn at that hour would set you back about 20 dollars.

OK, good info. Maybe we should stay in the zona colonial again. We have a room for one night at the hotel Conde de Penalba earlier in February when we arrive in SD. So, it sounds like we could stay there for a night before our flight out....and it would be an easy 30 minute taxi ride to the SDQ in light early morning traffic??? Does this sound like a good plan?

It seems like a good plan. The Hotel Conde Penalba is a nice hotel right in the center of everything on El Conde. It has a great outdoor cafe for people watching and is very close to many excellent, though pricy, restaurants and shops. The cab ride in the early AM should be easy as it is not far from the highway to the airport. 30-45 minutes. Be aware that the cabs are not metered so make sure you are clear on the price before you get in the cab. Also the cabs on the street in that area (tourist area) tend to be priced higher than others in the city. You could try calling Apollo Cab to get a competative rate. Good luck and enjoy.

Apollo Taxi, Aerotaxi, taxi Express, there are zillion of taxi companies in SD. Just DO NOT take the cab that is stationed in front of the hotel entrance or what is referred to as "Hotel Taxi". They would charge you double or triple the going rate. Insist that the front desk calls you one. Say Apollo Taxi, por favor, and make sure the taxi you get in has the small placard with the company name visible on the windshield.

Thanks a million everyone. I appreciate all of you in the know taking time to post here.

This is our second vacation in the DR. Our first trip was back in Feb '04 to Cabarete. We loved it.!!! We've been itching to get back and go see the whales in Samana bay. I have to say that we were most impressed by the locals. They treated us like old friends. We were so comfortable that weu did things that surprised us. One day we hired Silva taxi to take us around the north coast. When the taxi picked us up, the driver Joselito, told us that he was our tour guide. He said he had our whole day planned out for us. So scrapped our own agenda and let him take.us to Mosca & Santiago. It was fantastic. He took us to the Centro Leon which had just opened. We loved it. Hope this trip to the NE penn is great as well.

Thanks, Rick

Call Feddy, he works for Apolo but if you call him direct on his cel; he will only charge you DR900$ and is a good guy, I've never met anyone with as good a rates as him. Alternative cel; 809 790 1020. Call him the night before and he will be there in good time in the morning.
Also if you want to spend an evening in good company then you might want to consider calling Jorge and Angela on Ave Bolivar, RD1000 pesos per room per night in their home, but you wouldn't think it you get the space you need and more than you would get in any hotel. Really comfy and peaceful. It is a good place to know as they are good people offering a warm welcome, home cooking and anything else you could possibly want. Great to unwind before heading home, or on arrival to wind up:alien:

OK, thanks for the names, email and phone numbers. Looks like the Ave Bolivar is right there in the Zona Colonial. This trip is starting to take shape. Like the idea of starting out in Zona Colonial to check out some history and culture in the big bustling city. Get that in before we start to get in vacation (relax) mode. Then head to the Samana penn for some serious relaxation, then come back to SD for some down home hospitality before the flight home.
