All I can say is how can these guys live off what they are paid????? Except for the generals of course.

I am a medically pensioned military veteran who only spent 4 years in the army in the US yet no doubt my pension is more than what 90% of these soldiers earn. Where is the justice?

Well...

You know what, they may not get paid much, and yes they do deserve more. But, their sense of service is unquestionable, less so considering how little they receive. And for whats it worth they receive discipline, a sense of self esteem and income.

All better than not receiving anything of the sort.

Well I guess that as good justification as I've heard - thanks for the propaganda. I guess based on that the politicians that receive the salary the military should receive must be very especially proud for their contribution.

My recommendation is for them to enjoy it while it can because where they are more than likely going it would make a RD4000 earning cabo trying to raise a family of three look like an all expenses trip to Disney.

They are ready to maintain the peace, order and soverania any time Dominican people strike... to kill their own people.

you do know that these are propaganda photos, and that the dominican military does not always look like this? imagine a bunch of uniformed thugs with sunglasses and a machine gun sitting on the back of a pick up for a more accurate picture.
the miserable salary they get leads to major problems with corruption, professionalism and abuse of power, same as with the police. these men also do not enlist out of a sense of duty, but rather because other jobs they might aspire to are paid even worse, and do not present the afore mentioned opportunities for corruption and abuse of power.

I was married to a DR Military Captain...no corruption ever seen, but I agree that they don't always look like that. Then again, why should they? The salary is extremely poor, true, but not everybody is corrupt...

As in most militaries around the world the enlisted grunts get poor pay. They however do gt medical, dental, and food, plus clothing and footwear...etc. Add it up and it's more than they would make in many other jobs in the DR. Poor salaries do not lead to coruption, more morals and ethics do.

Many of the pictures (especially the ones of soldiers with ammo on their chests) look like they were taken of African Warlords ready to slaughter the next village in sight. Think Congo, Ghana, etc. .. Some (like the ones of the soldiers with helmets and bulletproof vests) look more like what the modern-military should be.

A veteran who ridicules another veteran defending a soldiers right to be paid a decent wage - outstanding.

Apart from being a jerk you apparently have no reason why most soldiers join the Army here.

As far as me lying about my disability I broke my back on a parachute jump in '86 while in the 407th of the 82 Airborne at Holland drop zone at Ft. Bragg NC - know it all.

No offense Bob but when there is a concentration of extreme poverty high crime is to be expected. Dominican military and police make much less than many other Dominicans and is fact below the poverty line here in the DR. In fact a sergeant doesn't make enough to buy a house nor a car and some even don't have enough to buy a motorcycle.
