From today's Sosua News:

"A few days ago, a sergeant of the traffic police fined an employee of the firm Barrick Gold for running a red light. This happened at the traffic lights in El Batey (Sos?a) opposite the supermarket Playero. The sergeant demanded a fine of 1200 pesos, but he then refused to hand over a receipt. The woman paid the fine and then her employer complained to the chief of the traffic police in the province of Puerto Plata, Colonel Juli?n Su?rez Cordero. The colonel had the sergeant suspected of corruption suspended immediately. The traffic police (AMET) was long regarded as impeccable and free of corruption practices. Initially, they earned a good salary and for that they didn?t need to mess around to earn something extra.

But in all these years the salaries of the AMET police men barely increased and for the inflation they just don?t earn enough to be not corruptible. AMET police men earn a salary of only 8,000 pesos a month. You can not survive on a salary like that, especially if you have a family with several children to maintain."

The AMET were pretty much bribe proof, at least in the good old days when the fines were minimal (RD$40 for no helmet on motorcycle, not really any point in asking for ? that in a bribe was there??), but as soon as the fines were massively increased it suddenly became viable for them to extort money from motorists!!!!! Well done the DR government

There is more to it than that, and the Amet guy is in Prison not just suspended.

There is much more to that story than Sosua News reported. In a nutshell the lady was involved in 2 seperate incidents in 2 days with AMET, Barrick pushed the corruption issue and have now put the amet officer and the lady's life in jeopardy. From what I know the amet officer is in jail and his family is after the lady for payment. Can you imagine being an amet officer in jail??? he must be having so much fun.

Why and how could the family be after the lady for money? Does nobody take responsibility for their own actions in this country!?!?

We took the more proactive route and simply give the amet guys 500 pesos from time to time. And we never get tickets and its always a hello and a wave. They have never asked for a dime.

A few weeks ago on a Saturday morning I was pulled over in front of Benny Katz office - were the AMET officers stand. The chunky, taller officer told me I ran the red light by Metro -- I did not. I told him , "no, it was not red" -- I refused to agree with his accusation. Asked for my license and then let me go .. not sure if they are looking for bribes or what. But I will not be accused of something I did not do. I guess it didn't hurt that I mentioned that I work with someone in the Sindico. :)

We gave 500 pesos once or at the most two times a year, Christmas being one. It was well worth it. We always had the traffic stopped both directions for us and we lived where we had to cross a busy main street frequently. Money well spent. Hope it was not my amet guy who got caught.

This is the type of "conditioning" that makes AMET turn into RATS. Corruption can't ever stop if you we don't stop paying the bribes. In short: don't feed the zoo animals, bubble gum is not in their normal diet!
