Could be some much needed good news for us here on the North Coast, from Dominican Today.

Puerto Plata. - With around announced 32 weekly flights from Canada, the city?s tourism starts to show signs of recovery, while representatives from several sectors pledged to put their house in order, to prevent past errors and to get the authorities and the population?s cooperation to protect that key industry.

Receptive Tourism Operators Association (OPETUR) president Michel Musa, speaking in the POP 2011 SUMMIT Forum, said the start of Dominican Republic?s tourist high season is good news, but also demands a consistent promotion of the Dominican tourism offer, especially the Puerto Plata destination.

He said 80 percent of the arrivals to the North Coast during the high season comes from Canada, and attributed it to the effort focused on that market, especially by spending in promotion and the direct work by the tour operator Nolitours and with the program IT ZONE.

Quoted by news source diariolibre.com, Musa predicted Puerto Plata?s best high season in eight years, with the arrival of around 60,000 additional Canadian tourists on 32 weekly flights, aboard 190 passenger jets.

He added that the operator Sunwing has increased its weekly flights from 2 to 8, as part of the expansion.

North Coast needs a huge upgrade of the hotels and structures! The best hotels on the North Coast (excluding Samana) are on the level of the lower-class hotels in Bavaro. Also, the AI pricing on North Coast is depressed, the rates are just a fraction of what they are on the East Coast. Obviously, they reflect the state of structure. Canadians wanting super cheap AI holidays flock in big numbers, because of that one single factor - price. And it's a vicious cycle, with the depressed rates, there is very little investment in upgrading, and without upgrading the price will continue to be depressed.
