Miami Herald article. Found out about this on a Bloomberg TV headline on their nightly news show.

"The area is now resting its hopes on a new marketing strategy and a $65-million cruise port under construction just west of Puerto Plata. Financed by a Dominican shipping family and Carnival Corp., it is expected to bring in thousands of visitors a day when it opens in late 2013."

Imagine if there was a true, coherent strategy in place to attract and retain high value tourists...any growth we see in tourism is not because of, but in spite of the government and due only to the country's natural beauty and the warmth of its people.
