From today's Sosua News:

After Pap?, Mam? came

In May 2012, the elections for the new president of the Dominican Republic are held. About 15 different parties take part in the elections to try to win the presidency.

If a party wins the elections, then that party has also all kinds of lucrative office jobs to divide. But for these elections, there are in fact only two serious candidates considered for the presidency. Namely Hip?lito Mej?a of the PRD (Revolutionary Party) and Danilo Medino of PLD (Liberal Party). Hip?lito was from 2000 to 2004 President of the Republic. He lost the 2004 election to Leonel Fern?ndez of the PLD. Especially the last year of Hip?lito's presidency was a disaster for the country. The peso devalued to 60 pesos for one U.S. dollar and there were constant shortages. There was no electricity for weeks, no petrol and no butane. Now eight years later, everyone seems to have forgotten this and especially the 'man in the street' would like to see Hip?lito to return as president. He speaks the language of the street and there was, as they say here, at the time 'more money in the street.

Danilo Medino is an intellectual, studied chemistry and economics and is a bit technocratic and considered to be too smart. Hip?lito started his election campaign with the slogan 'Lleg? daddy' (daddy's coming) and he seemed to be heading for the victory. In the polls he got nearly 50% of the votes. But now the wife of Leonel Fern?ndez decided to be he running mate of Danilo. Margarita Cede?o Fern?ndez could become the vice president and she started her election campaign with the slogan 'Lleg? Mam?' (Mama's coming). The chances for Danilo Medino have therefore increased considerably. Margarita Cede?o has been engaged in recent years in various social projects such as health, education and women's rights. Especially among women, she is incredibly popular. The polls have now seen a turnaround.

Danilo and Margarita clearly make a dream team. Their joint election campaign slogan is 'Juntos somos la victoria!' (Together we win)
