Unification of the DR & Central America

Do you think the DR unifying with Central America is the right decision?

As many of you probably don't know, in the last few years there has been a movement towards greater unification of several Central American countries, Dominican Republic included.

A few examples of this would be (each of the following titles are links to their respective articles -all in Spanish, use an online translator if you don't understand them):

El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua eliminate visa requirement for Dominican citizens.

Dominican Republic, for the first time in history, achieves the presidency of PARLACEN (Spanish acronym for Central American Parliament, composed of all Central American countries plus the Dominican Republic minus Costa Rica and Panama).

Central American and Dominican presidents approve the creation of a single Central American currency.

There are other agreements that points towards ever greater integration within Central America and the Dominican Republic, such as the unification of customs procedures, free trade agreement blocks (ie. DR-CAFTA), among others.

When you really think about it, the DR is like a Central American country thrown right in the middle of the Caribbean, if only with a bigger and faster developing economy than much of the rest of Central America. One could always argue the racial difference, but the same could be said of various Central American countries too. In the end, the DR does feels like Central America more so than Caribbean, IMO.

Discuss.

The "Dominicans" might want to be part of "Central America",but they don't want the DR!
The Dominican Republic has been found guilty of "Cheating" on the DRCAFTA agreement, many times!
What did you EXPECT???????????
This island feels NOTHING like Central America!
The DR is already unified with Haiti, what more do you want????
Your question is MUTE!:speechles:speechles:speechles

This will only happen when Santa Claus decides to change Christmas for Easter;)

Should 'The Hippo Papi' get back into power in May then we all know this IS a possibility Frank!!!!! He'll pass a bill calling it Semana Santa Claus.

In MY humble opinion - the bigger the pot, the more levels of 'removal from the originator to the end user/intended beneficiary' .............. the more chance there is for the politicians to take 'their share'!!!

I think it's HB who describes Parlacen as "the biggest waste of time and money" and it's certainly not short of rivals for that title.

It's underway already like it or not!

The question should be more in the lines of what should the DR goals and aim be in view of this development, both short and mid to the long term in the CA union?

The currency is a need in order to facilitate trade and investment with security regardless of the rise and fall of a single economy's currency to the USD$. Another is that each nation can avail assets that are not based on foreign currency like the USD$ to finance their own development with the help of the stronger economies in the Union. This requires a strong set of policies in regards to public and foreign debt thresholds, banking regulations and overseeing from external auditors when called upon.

Can it be done? Frankly there's little to halt the integration of the CA economies into a single block, in face of the mounting interests in common fronts that afflict the region.

All in all the DR is the largest economy and the one with the most to risk, but at the same time the one with the most to win based on the same market indulgence.

The question of the hour is how long will it take for the DR to take the lead role in the integration panel?

I expect little to change the least of which will be the DR getting a different currency.

Why do I say this? Well look at the Euro and all the challenges it has to do with with failed states dragging it down. Even given all of Europe's supposed more efficient and less corrupt governments that LA I doubt the Euro will last 10 years so how long would a CA currency last??? For those who doubt how long do you think the German public go financing the indiscretions of the Greek and Spanish lawmakers? It won't last forever - another crisis like the last one and Germany will bail imo.

Great Britain saw this coming and never changed their currency nor ever will. If the DR doesn't learn from this it will at some point. I expect most of this fanciful posturing and pontificating is just a way to look for big contracts to fill somebodies pockets at the expense of the poor of his country, nothing more. Poca realista.
