How safe is the Dominican Republic compared to other destinations, for Canadians

Very interesting comparisons...I wonder if assaulters differentiate between Canadians and their lovely neighbors, Americans? Used to be young Canadian backpackers would proudly display their Canadian flag on their packs....and as a few told me, as much to proclaim their non-American-ness as their Canadian-ness.

God bless us all. And humanists and atheists bless us too!

Good Afternoon Conchman,

Thanks for posting this data. It was interesting. Although, one needs to advise great caution with statistics like this. The most obvious outliers that didn't seem to get mentioned are the facts that in developing countries, statistics are just not 'recorded'.

The average visitor to Australia shouldn't expect more violence than the average visitor to Mexico. Surely the numbers are inflected because the Australians have better data keeping.

Also, there's something to be said about demographics. Most of that violence in Australia is probably at 3am after a bar, as drinking and fighting are a natural sport amongst the convicts oops I mean citizens of Australia :)

Anyways, if you're an idiot even the safest country can be 'dangerous'...

I am English and people in the Dums still think I'm American, and that England is a place in America. Such a crazy thing to explain while someone is shaving my head that England is not in America, and when he says 'Ah, yeh, Aleman si, en la Norte!' as in ah yeh Engalnd and Germany are some kind of area in the usa where we are fighting for independence, really, I believe I have left having my hair cut thinking 'that dumbass thinks we want independence from the US, he still doesn't get it'.
I even bought Tony an Atlas for the shop, so he at least knows the world is round, but is upset the DR is so small.

Sorry I didn't touch on the dangerous thing, Anyone can be dangerous or in Danger, avoid it and most of the time it will avoid you. After all, Danger is not an entity, it is an aftermath of an action, or the premath of a thought!

I would assume these numbers were reported by the Canadian embassies, but I could be wrong.

And sometimes you don't even have to be an idiot. You can just be in the wrong place at the wrong time. It happens. Sometimes kismet sucks.

True, but don't forget the infrastructure issue.
Each time something happens in Australia let's say, police show up. Record the incident. Their systems are computerized. At the end of the year, when the Canadian embassy queries their computer system, they have the infrastructure to collect and store that data.

Okay so now something happens in Sosua...MAYBE the real police show up- MAYBE! and if they record it, where does it get recorded? If you've ever been to a PN office, you know they write everything down in a book with pencil, nobody contacts the embassy unless it's a SERIOUS crime, say a murder, or something to that effect...

This probably explains why places like Australia and Austria are more dangerous than Mexico in this survey. They're computerized, where every single smash and grab is recorded by the embassy. Whereas in Mexico, it's a bit more...ya tu sabais... 'looosy gooosey' lol.

Have a nice day!

Conchman - aka Ocean World,
Safer for what - tourists, foreign residents or what !!!!
Are the dolphins safe ? Have you got the contaminated water from the rubbish dump under control that was killing your dolfins!

Compared with other places such as Mexico, we want a Zero Crime rate but it is just not going to happen here!
We are residents here and find it less of a hassle than other places but the AMRATS are a real problem in Sosua. Ask for the green ticket and they take you car.

Conchman - it has not got any better and Maimon "PORT" will not realy happen

Olly and the team

Seriously, one country safer than another? Aren't countries generally large and diverse?

What part of what country?

Hell, even in the US there are places cops just don't want to go. And in France, they WON'T go...

The truth is that there is danger everywhere in the world. It is impossible to know when or if something will happen to you so the rule of thumb is to always be ready for a confrontation as a precaution no matter where you are.

It's really alot to do with your state of mind, too.

Three people encounter dangerous situation and have three distinctly different reactions: one freaks out, one runs, one stays for the fun....

There is a difference........I live in America, we have horrible crimes and many of them. But America is so huge I am 60 yrs old and never witnessed a serious crime in my life!!!!! Now take DR. Very small and compact. I beleive from my research that not only will I witness a serious crime, I may very well be involved!

I was never looking for it but in the 3,5 years that I've lived there I've seen and experienced more than I've ever did before and I was no square. The DR is very violent and not just in some areas but in most.

I lived in the DR for 21 years and I never experienced any type of crimes. My parents and my whole family lives in the DR and they have never experienced any type of crimes.

The question is in what hell hole you used to lived when you were living in the DR? Were you looking to get into trouble?

I use to own a bar in a small village 15 years ago half and hour away from San-Francisco de Macoris. Some custommer use to ask me for Anthony Santos songs and other for Sergio Vargas. Since i couldn t put 2 songs at once, the one who didn t get is song had his machete ready to cut you in parts !! One of the girls i use to hire lost an ear on a first day job. She was dam lucky not to have lost half of her head since she moves a bit on the right side. That was the show on evening bases. There are stories you wouldn t beleave in that little jungle. After 2 years in operation i close the joint, 2 guys had their guns on each of the heads ready to shoot each other. That is life ........it is part of the culture.

You must be the only one in the DR who has never experienced any crime, good for you. Are you dyslectic? I wrote that I was never looking for it.
