I want to import a car to Santo Domingo and I just have a few questions. I know the company to transport my car here to Santo Domingo; however, I would like to know if I want to change the propulsion system from gasoline to natural gas, would I be better off getting it done in the U.S.A or the DR. I would like the system to be entirely in natural gas, not dual petroleum too. I would also like any information concerning Chrysler products (eye is on the Chrysler 300), repair, availability of parts ( I do not drive much in the city, but I would like some room when I drive to the beach, mountains. I also see the Camry is also on the CAFTA list and that is also another eye sparkler. Thanks in advance.

You can have your car added with natural gas and it will also use gasoline when switched over. You can have that done here for about $3000..There is a cheaper version but would not recommend it.The stations selling natural gas are expanding and you would not have any problems here in Santo Domingo. The difference in price is ....Gasoline around 259 pesos a gallon, natural gas about 25 pesos a gallon.

@ wanna - I have a Chrysler vehicle. Your parts - some basic parts in SD, Nunez Diaz auto parts, Repuestos Caribe, etc. but I mostly import parts - it is actually cheaper to import even bulky and heavy parts than buy them here. I just imported premium brake pads with shipping to DR for the price of basic metallic ones bought locally here. For more than basic repairs, I use Chryscar in SD, specialists in Chrysler and associated brands. on a 100% natural gas car, you MAYBE can get around fine in the City of SD, but you will run out of fuel when going to the beach or mountains. There are virtually no natural gas stations outside of SD. heck i even find it difficult sometimes to find LPG stations in SD when I run out of LPG there.... for the next three years at least, LPG will still be the king among the alternative fuels. And do not go for single fuel system, having a gallon or two of gas(oline) in your main tank can be a life saver in some situations.

Would I be subjected to having a gas tank in my trunk? I would rather have it outside the vehicle, perferibly surrounded by a metal covering in case of explosion. Was your two system conversion done by a professional? what are your thoughts of the Chysler 300C for intercity, beach, and resort travel only ( no daily Santo Domingo commute)?

Most people prefer SUVs here since the roads can be in bad shape. As mentioned already you will become good at importing parts for a Chrysler.

You need a SUV or crossover if you are going into the mountains. Don't those cars always have suspension part problems? Good luck with the bad roads. I have been deep in the mountains and when it starts raining hard, you will wish that you had all wheel drive and with the tall speed bumps you will wish you had more ground clearence.
