Hi All

Well it's been 3 years since we left the DR and we have just booked a 2 week holiday to return in June.

We will be staying at the Iberostar in Costa Dorada (first time at this hotel) with the two little ones so I hope they have good facilities to keep them entertained!

The casino in Costa Dorada was open before left but now I hear that there is also a new nightclub upstairs. Is it popular? the latest 'in' place to be?

Also, they had just finished building a parade of shops in the Costa Dorada complex before we left and at the time there was one shop open - a gift shop if I remember correctly. Is that parade of shops full now or are they still empty?

I have heard that many of the hotels in Playa Dorada have now closed which explains why there were only 3 or 4 coming up when I was searching.

It will be very interesting to see how things have changed in and around the area and I am really looking forward to our trip back ;)

My family and I just returned in late March from the IBC, the grounds are really nice but the food to us was so-so at the restaurants. We really enjoyed the buffet everyday. We did not go to the casino so I can't comment on that. We spent most of our time outside the resort grounds looking at the area. We did go to every show every night we were there and the kids ended up getting involved in most of them. Enjoy your stay!

I spent 3 weeks in Playa Dorada in Feb 2012, and went to the casino by the ICD almost nightly. The nightclub upstairs is definitely the "in" place to be. I would especially recommend it if you like standing next to jet engines while having a conversation. The best seat in the casino is at the base of the stairs, watching the young ladies go up and down to hit the bano.

LOL! We have two young kids so won't be going clubbing. The reason I was asking is that if it is the new 'in' place to be then the whole area will be very busy, especially with the locals at the weekends.

I do however like a trip to the casino when on holiday and I have been to this casino a few times - it's much nicer than the one next to what used to be Mangu nightclub (not sure if that's still around now?).

Do you know whether that parade of shops is open in the Costa Dorada complex?

I cannot answer that, but will comment that, since your last visit, a new La Sirena superstore has opened on the Malec?n, just a short ride away. La Sirena would be much cheaper than any shops within the AI complex and the Malec?n is a pleasant and safe (even with children) area to visit in the daytime.

If you want more upmarket stuff, there are a number of boutique type shops in Calle Beller in the city which would offer greater choice and lower prices than shops in the AI.

More generally, tourism has continued to run down on the North Coast in the three years you have been away, so there is less activity and fewer options. This being the DR, that hasn't made prices any more competitive.

Despite that gloomy note I am sure you will still have a very enjoyable holiday here.
