Get the tomatoes ready, it's me again. I would like to hear from anyone that is staying permanently or goes there a lot to Samana'. From my research it seems to be what I'm looking for. When I go on vacation I like to experience the locals rather than spend all my time bending elbows with fellow yanks. No offense meant but if I want to hang out with fat bald guys like me, I can save the price of a ticket and stay home....lol. soooooooo,,,,,please tell me about your town and how it goes there? I gave my MO before that I like to walk around and bump into locals and chat, maybe play some dominos or chess, drink a few beers. I don't do nightclubs, dancing or sword swallowing. Anyway, hope someone will respond to this and give me the scoop..........PH

Many and Few

Do you speak French?

He does not have to speak 'the language of the gods'...
He can avoid the French. :bunny:
[Actually few play 'dominoes' and most of them do not socialize with other nationalities here. Martin B. is an exeption... he is the one to play chess with...]

Anyway, the OP will find a lot of places where he can meet the locals, they are still the majority... ;)
Americans are few... gracias a Dios*.

If you have spent time in Cuba and Mexico which are much LARGER then DR finding towns were their are only locals should be second nature to you. I have never been to Cuba but I will take a wild guess that there are more tourist in Havana then Santiago de Cuba. It will take you FIVE SECONDS to find out where the DR's tourist areas are. If you know how Cuba and Mexico WORKS you know how the Dominican Republic WORKS regarding hanging out with locals.

PH - do you speak Spanish?
I just went to LT for the first time with my wife. I speak Spanish somewhat fluently; she speaks high school Spanish. It was her experience that most Dominicans in LT do not speak English very well or at all. I speak fine, but Dominican Spanish is fast and it's sometimes hard for me to understand.
We were only there 2 weeks, but in that time, I did play dominoes. It was at Restaurant Luis on Playa Coson. The musicians were sitting around playing dominoes, I went over to watch and one of the guys gave me his seat. Now, granted, I am not fat and balding, nor male, so I don't know if you would receive the same treatment.
Something that I appreciated: My wife then came over and sat next to me and watched. At one point, one of the guys asked me if she is my sister or friend. I answered that she is my wife. There was a beat and then he said something like "that's fine" and shook my hand.
