From today's Sosua News:

[h=5]On 20 June 1959, around 8 o'clock in the morning, Sos?a was bombed by the Dominican Air Force. Aircraft from the Air Force strafed and bombed both houses and the beach. Later it turned out the bombing was a mistake.[/h]
[h=5]A group of Dominican exiles accompanied by Cuban and other foreign volunteers decided to attempt to make an end to the dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo. A bloody dictatorship that terrorized the country for almost 30 years. The exiles were inspired by the revolution in Cuba led by Fidel Castro and Ernesto 'Che' Guevara. It was thought that the population of the Dominican Republic was ready for a similar revolution. In the original plan Sos?a was designated as landing area by the armed fighters. The other was an airborne landing near San Juan de la Maguana or Constanza and landings per vessel at La Isabela and Sos?a. For the bad weather the landing on the beach of Sos?a was cancelled and the boats had to return to Cuba.[/h]

At the second attempt a few days later on the morning of June 20, 1959, they chose for a landing on the beach of Maim?n and Estero Hondo. The secret service of Trujillo was aware of these landings but still thought that it would take place in Sos?a and La Isabela. When the navy had observed the invaders at sea this was passed to the Air Force. The aircraft immediately took off and bombed and strafed the beach of Sos?a and the houses in Charamicos. The beach and Charamicos were full of bomb craters and the hotel Garden City was largely destroyed. Fortunately the bombing and strafing caused only material damage, and if by some miracle there were no injuries or deaths among the residents.
The army of Trujillo did make a quick end to the invasion and killed or arrested the freedom fighters. The foreign participants of the invasion were soon afterwards set at liberty, but the Dominican exiles were first tortured and then got the death penalty.

Didn't the "rebels" get a plane or two stuck in the sand on the beach at Punta Rucia or something similar? Very vague recollection of some "Keystone Kops" scenario regarding an invasion launched from Cuba

That was the Estero Hondo landing, near P Rucia.
