Why is it that there have been soo many cases of women dying after being beat or attacked by their man in the Dominican Republic this year? Is it any more common for men to be violent partners in the Dominican Republic than it is anywhere else? I have seen guys say that someone should smack a woman there but I never saw one time when someone attacked a woman in the Dominican Republic.

It's cause women are getting more liberated and some men don't like it. Back in the days there was no such thing as "protection order" for a battered partner - It's still very flimsy, but at least it exists. So back then women who were beat up just had to take it and don't even think about leaving the guy. Nowadays women are more likely to say they want out of the marriage and some guys just can't take the fact that the woman doesn't want to be with them anymore.

Another disturbing trend I've noticed is guys who live outside The DR (Have migrated at some point), but still have some girlfriend / wife down there. Of course the guy only visits every once in a while, but still expects the woman to suck it up and be faithful. Eventually the guy gets wind that she's cheating (real or imagined) and then goes down there and kills them (I've heard of several cases like this and personally knew one of the victims).

Lack of education + availability of guns + human emotion (jealousy) + alcohol/drugs = High rate or murdered women.

Funny little story-a friend has a home in Jarabacoa, and she told me she has a neighbor who gets beaten by her husband on a regular basis.

She's called the police on several occasions and they've never showed up. When she went to the police station, the person on duty told her no police officer showed up because they're short on gas.

He said if she wants a policeman to go to her house when she calls, she'd have to leave 500 pesos for gas money.

When you're dealing with that type of ingrained neanderthal mentality, there is nothing for women to do except defend themselves.

i tell you something. someone here should hang the parents by their feet over a river full of crocodiles. how can a normal parent allow their 14 YEAR OLD CHILD to go and live with an adult man?

That's what I keep going back to. Where are the fathers of these abused women?

meter semper certa, pater semper incertus, as romans would say. dominican families are often incomplete so father is of no interest here. where the f**k is the mother, i want to know.

this is bloody viscous circle of "this is how things are", repeated from generation to generation, by MOTHERS.

Women's Acid

(...) some Dominican women are being doused with some concoction called devil's acid. It's a mix of drain cleaner and PVC solvent. They just sentenced some guy to 30 years prison for using it.

Normally the Dominican culture reserves acid attacks to women and they use it against each other of their gender.
This is a rarer case of a lady (?) laywer (!) using the substance on a man:

REENV?AN CAUSA ABOGADA QUE ROCIO ACIDO DEL DIABLO A HOMBRE EN TORRE ALTA

One time when I was in Sosua, this street girl asked me to escort her to the moto-concho guys because the cops were doing a sweep. Ted, from Rocky's, saw me walking with her and asked me the next day if I had taken her home(which I hadn't), and then told me that Marco had a video of her getting into a bar fight with another woman who was trying to bird-dog a guy she was trying to pick up. She smashed a beer bottle on the bar and then slashed the other woman's throat with it. The other woman survived. It was quite a story esp since she was prob only 4' 10" and was at most 80 pounds.

I've also seen fights where women are throwing beer bottles at each other. It is one crazy place sometimes...

And what are the stats exactly on Male to Female domestic abuse in the DR ??

in a population of 9 million or so there will be homicides - the problem is how many, how often, and does this represent a social problem or simply a function of human beings living and interacting.

I think I heard the number of Dominicans killed by police is over 200 a year, but I forget the source so the number could be higher or lower.

The "acid" wasn't muriatic acid, which is a form of sulfuric. Drain cleaner is lye based (so actually a base) and the solvent prob makes it stick to the skin.

I will never forget when a tigre told me that my girlfriend "no sirve" and slap her and beat her up and come with him to the bars and clubs to meet new women. I thought he was playing but now I guess he was serious. Now I know why his face was so serious when I was laughing.

Usually we walk every morning around 6am. On Monday we were driving to POP so we didn't do our walk. When we got back from POP we were told our neighbor around the corner shot his wife in the face & I guess assuming she was dead, stuck the gun in his month & killed himself. Crazy thing is the bullet went through her cheeks & out the other side. She's still in hospital. I thought Rio San Juan was quiet. NOT!
