From today's Sosua News:

[h=5]The national police, represented by the Brigadier General Roberto Almonte Pablo Morales, has announced that an extra police patrol car was purchased. This car will be deployed on the route between the airport Gregorio Luper?n (Puerto Plata airport) and Sos?a with the aim to provide more security along this route. The Brigadier General wants to improve the safety for the tourists who spend their holiday in Sos?a and Cabarete so they don't have to worry about the trip from the airport. For some robberies on tourists who arrived at the airport in Santo Domingo, the Dominican Republic earned a bad reputation in the international press.[/h]
[h=5]With the deployment of this additional police patrol car the brigadier general hopes to prevent that the airport Puerto Plata and hence Sos?a and Cabarete, also receive a bad reputation.[/h]

Although I agree that extra policing is never a bad thing, I've never heard of any problems along this route.

My job takes me from my home in Cabarete to POP airport to meet many tourist flights. I've been doing it for the last seven years and I've never seen or heard anything that would cause it to earn this supposed reputation.

You are right, and the SN article indicates there has not been a problem. However, there was a problem at SDQ that was severely criticized by the US government, publicly criticized, and the authorities don't want the same to occur at POP in the future.

The incoming individuals who were targeted at SDQ were those who declared on their arrival forms that they carried US$10,000 or more. I'm assuming not many tourists that you pick up are in that category.

Cabarete, Dominican Republic
one of my friends was robbed at gunpoint between sosua and cabarete a couple of years ago. he was driving back from cabarete at about 11pm and got a puncture. the guy came out with a gun and made him get on his knees.......he (my friend) decided to just run away and hid in some bushes for over two hours......never been so scared he said. he has since moved back to UK

Nice a car patroling the stretch of road is nice but I feel there has been more problems of robbieries of tourists and expats further down the road between Sosua and Sabaneta never heard of anything from the airport not saying it cannot happen though. Here is an idea how about making the corrupt cops in Sousa Cabarete actually work and respond to calls rather than setting up road blocks to extort pesos from people? Also I would think that doing this for the Santiago Airport would be great because alot of tourist fly into santiago to come to to the North Coast and imho that road posses more of a threat. Not being ciritical just looking at the whole picture.

A police car is nice. But when the cop gets thirsty is he gonna stop all rental cars leaving POP looking to offer his armed escort service. Talking about armed escorts. I always have one meet me at STI. Good to know high people in low places.

This is good for the area, plain and simple.

Maybee they're just thinking ahead, before the bad guys start problems on this stretch of road.

I don't see how it helps anyone going to Cabarete, if the police car only goes to Sosua.

Buy all the cars you want, doesn't change who will be driving them.

It's like giving Stephen Hawking new shoes and expecting him to dance like Michael Jackson.

Valeu Cara!
More police presence is always good news, but this is another short term solution to a long term problem. Patrols aways ride with their police lights on alerting the good and bad guys, and in a couple of weeks, the cars end up trashed with no maintenance plan or spare parts.

Solution? Dedicate more resources and training to police officers, and make the officers sign for these cars. This would hold them responsible for anything that happens to it.

Without the governments help, police will always face an uphill challenge.

More corrupt police is not the full answer. The DR needs sting operations, have some phony passengers declare $10,000 at the airport, find out who the leak is, then be well armed and kill the thieves.

I would like to see Pichardos next post to be the construction of a huge prison! And the announcement of Nationwide undercover operation , maybe headed up by an outside consultant, Rudy Giuliani. Then of course you will need an undercover operation within the undercover operation to weed out the bad cops, and so on, and so on.

There is no reason chain gangs can not build new prisons in a country such as DR. Financing should not be an excuse/reason.

Having police patrol that strech of road can only be a good thing. They may shake down tourists for a few pesos now and again, but for the most part the PN does not turn a blind eye to crime and robberies while they are in progress - after the fact is another topic.

The only downside would be if the geniuses have the car patrolling during certain hours only - like AMET from 8-5 mon to fri - then it wont help with much of anything.

Not much point in building a prison if your first response is to "kill the thieves".
