Dominican gymnast Yamilet Pena Abreu was the top scorer in her opening performance in vault at the London Olympics 2012. She bested Giulia Steingruber, Switzerland, Angel Wong, Hong Kong, Zol Marques, Portugal, Valerilla Maksiuta, Israel and Dorina Boczogo, Hungary.
Her accomplishments are more than extraordinary because of all the hardships she has had to go through to get to where she is. Remember there is no tradition in the Dominican Republic for a gymnast. Making matters worse, she did not win a medal neither in the Central American Games nor the Pan American Games and worked her way to qualify through the gymnastics championships, and thus did not have the minimal support of the Dominican Olympic Committee until the very last. The government of France and Air France sponsored her for final weeks of training in France, that has made a difference.
