I'm only here for the weather, Sun, Beach, and booze vacation, in respites of 1 month at a time 3 times a year... I cant stand the enneificient cultural malaise of getting things done here, from construction to repairs, to just common sense.. But all of that seems to sizzle away when me and my girlfriend at the time are watching the sunset, sunrise or the waves breaking on the shores... all else is a cluster f _ ck. I mean really, these folks are not the sharpest knife in the Ginsu set.
Seriously looking to make large coin down here is a headache beyond redemption... So look at it as an escape from the real world unless you have tapped into a niche, and make your coin from home. enjoy.. :chinese:

you did well for yourself, man. after all, so many come here for cheap pu**y. so a beach sunset is quite a delightful change ;)

and i agree: DR is one big f**k up but when you learn to ignore dominican reality and substitute your own - it gets better instantly. chillin' is a way to go here :)

I was going through a construction repair yesterday when I posted this, and its taken 4 attempts to fix a leak in my ceiling. Don't get me wrong, I really love the Dominican people but for life of me I need to find a "John Holmes" from HGTV to come in and get this done!! I just know when I come back in 2 months from today all of the ceiling dry wall will be stained and need to be replaced again.. sigh....

Owner installed a new waterheater last year march. It broke down last week, unrepairable. So the owner bought a new one (yes, we have an exceptionally nice and reasonable landlord). The guy installed it, and it did not work. He suggested getting an electrician to check out the thermostat. He was really surprised I told him to put the ****ing thing back into the box, and to go back to the ferreteria to get another one. But he did it, and guess what, the new one works. I do not know for how long though...

Repeat the above story with the flushes on the toilet not working, the kitchen faucet, etc...

PS... I still love it here... and I cut my hair real short so the grey is not that visible...

Yes! Your story is similar like mine.. After a while I just shake my head and accept it for what it is.. Also I cant count how many times a trades person with a power tool plugged into the outlet without a "plug" on the end of the chord, just the two wires put into the socket... I always wonder what happened to plug? :squareeye

that is what they use their SUPER tool for... the screwdriver. They sold the plug, and bought some tape, to make the cord longer...

Well Contango- first of all, know the culture, respect the culture. That"s not to say agree with the culture. Its their culture and you are a visitor. Do you speak the language? If so, for me your criticism has some validity. If you don't, you really don't know what is going on as it is always being explained to you from a third party. Here, like everywhere, there is a huge difference between educated and non educated people. Who are you hanging out with ? The local moto concho or the engineer from the capital?

Just because you haven't found someone capable to do repairs or construction doesn't mean they aren't out there buddy.

With regard to appliances, I must be lucky because none of mine break. :)

Have had many of those...AC went out, refrig went out...Take a deep breath (ok many). I agree with Chip (yes I agree with Chip) that there are a few out there who do good and honest repairs.. Like my day today.."lovely person" ran into the backend of my new car...I have a dual exhaust thing (hubby thing) and now it is pushed off to the side...To the surprise of many I was rather calm...Again deep breathes...oh and exhale ok..lol

Totally agreed with you, we are F**king lazy. Nothing compared to people in this part of the world... 1:19 am I just got home from work and saw a couple who lives next to me walking and and doing exercise at this time of the day. Never saw this in in my 47 years of life over there.

They might have to jobs same like some people I know around here...

Ummm... I think you mean MIKE Holmes. He could help you with your construction problems. If you manage to "dig up" JOHN Holmes, (the old porn actor -- died of AIDS years ago), he could help you with your chicas, but I doubt if he could do anything for your drywall. LOLOLOL
