Long term visit to Cabarete

Hi there. We are planning to go to Cabarete for a 6 mos. stay to evaluate whether we will enjoy living in the DR going forward. We will be arriving on Spirit into Santiago and wish to bring our Pomeranian and a small bird, a Cockatiel. The DR Embasy in MIA would not give any info regarding what is required to bring the pets into the DR. I know about the vacinations for the dog, but I do not know what needs to happen at the airport. Also, I have tried to search topics for importing birds, pet birds and birds but have not been able to find any threads on what needs to be done. Can anyone help?
