Interesting article.
As an American born male who interacts with my wife's family in SD, I think Diaz does a wonderful job. The machismo male, and his wife, sons, daughters, and novias are complex often wonderful people. And like so many of us are damaged in some way, in the case of many dominican families, the gender roles and frequent machismo actions including widely accepted (often not with pleasant consequences) polygamy type behavior, creates a complicated social structure that Diaz neither endorses or decrys, but details with great clarity.

I enjoy his work as it builds connections for me between the US and DR culture and social morays that as a non dominican I otherwise do not have access to especially as I spilt my time more evenly between the two countries.

Thank you Mountainannie for posting the link. It opened my eyes to the real power of Junot Diaz's writing.
The sentence quoted in the article "The half-life of love is forever. " is extraordinary in its simplicity and clarity.
