Wikimapia is pretty cool.

I think what makes it different is users can add things to the map once signed in to wikimapia - for instance you can place a rectangle on the map and provide it a label and then save that so others can see it.

Yes, the locations are polygons instead of the pin points, and they have more info than in google earth/maps, which has links to the sites but not much more. It seems MUCH faster too, but you can't change the orientation of the map. You can also use it while online, while with Google Earth, you have to open it separately. The locations often have YELP! type reviews, which are a big help.
