PJT again found himself on the new Autopista del Coral this weekend and really enjoyed the use of this newest infrastructure addition to the tourism industry of the east. However, what he did not like was the first harbinger of visual pollution to encroach the new highway that ruins the view of the countryside of its natural and normal state. It is the huge ORANGE advertising sign overpowering the landscape at/about Higuey km 17.

This new road offers the travelers and tourists a brief look into the recently uncluttered version of the RD. You travel along the campo and farms of Veron/Higuey to the greenery of the Central Romana cane fields to the gorge of the Rio Chavon. It is sort of like seeing the director’s cut of a movie on a cable channel or movie house without the hassle of the incessant interruptions advertising/promotions of broadcast TV.

The signage benefits the media company, the owner of the property, and government. Yet, the scenery surrounding the signage is not the owned by the media company or the property owner.

We all know this signage suggests the result of some kind of deal with the autopista developer, Odebrecht; government, property owner, and media. However, there has to be some review of what is transpiring so we do not get the visual signage pollution we are continuously confronted with in our daily travels.

The government should be aware it has a responsibility to maintain the tourist zone in an environment that will sustain and increase tourism. It needs to be cognizant that among the reasons the tourist comes to the island is to get away from visual pollution of home and not to be confronted by it on holiday. However, PJT is resolved to the matter that government will take no interest in this situation as long as it gets its portion of the pie.:disappoin

It would be nice to hear some feedback on this matter.

PJT

We went to Cueva de las Maravillas and back today and noticed the large sign PJT mentions, as well as several new smaller signs. I agree, it's a shame - the uninterrupted scenery was so refreshing before they started to appear. But it was always just a matter of time. We stopped in La Romana on the way back and made a stop at the fabulous Crema :) www.facebook.com/cremapasteleria
