Over the last century the relationship between the US and the Dominican Republic has at sometimes been rocky ?even aggressive ? and other times supportive and friendly. This Saturday, March 9 at 1:30 Meeting Place is hosting a discussion about the United States' influences ? past, present, and future ? in the Dominican Republic. (NOTE: La Playa mixed up the dates for this discussion and the film presentation -- the discussion is Saturday 9th, the film is Saturday 16th). Leading Saturday's discussion will be Prof. Luis Midence, specialist in Latin American history at PUCMM University in Santiago. In addition, commentary will be provided by US Consul Fausto Gomez, who has just recently assumed the office of US Consul in the Puerto Plata region and is interested in meeting Americans living/visiting in the area and outlining some of the services the consulate office can provide.

I am sure HB will make it a lively discussion. Sorry we can't get there on Saturday.

My wife and I have attended a few of these.

WHAT A WASTE OF TIME!

They get your information and promise that we will get U.S. Gov. updates and other information including social events.

NADA.... ZIP.... ZERO.

The US rarely has social events on the North Coast. Unlike the Canadians.
Fausto will be just fine. They have a newly remodeled office, different look, more secure.
Yes, it's still a P/T time job. Kind of. When anyone is issued a smartphone, the
line blurs. Smartphones never sleep, nor do their owners/users, especially when issued by the employer.
US gov't still uses BB for the time being.
Don't know what kind of "updates' one might expect.

went, saw and conquered. such a great pleasure to listen to HB and see him again. sadly, my totally legitimate question whether trujillo had syphilis was not received well by some (that was in a context, btw, not out of the blue). gee, some folks just do not have investigative mind...

How many attended?

What did the US Consul have to say, and what was the general opinion of him?

there was a small group, below 20, i am sure. the consul could not make it, however. his brother (i think) had a car accident in SD and he was just could not make it on time.
shame too because i wanted to inquire about visa procedure.

DV8 at least you went..I would have loved to have been there to see the look on everyone's face with your "syphilis" question. I mean enquiring minds need to know..

you know, we talked about trujillo having busy sex life. and about his possible origins with mother being "a woman of ill repute", as HB beautifully put it. then there was a question on his motives and why he did all the bad stuff. so i put all this together and asked about syphilis. it could have been either congenital or acquired during his life. and historically it has been associated (due to its effect on the brain) with onsets of violent and cruel behaviour. it was said ivan the terrible and hitler both had the french disease... plus apparently el jefe suffered from some peen problems (urinal infections).

one woman looked at me as if i suggested she had it...

Yeah, the lovely DV8 set the room atwitter....it was a legitimate question, and could well have been the cause of some of his more bizarre actions. However, I have not seen or even heard from any historians about this possibility, since as far as we know, no autopsy--for patholigies was carried out before he was shipped off for burial.
The group was interesting. I wish Der Fish had identified himself...would be nice to attach a face to the nickname. There were four Dominicans there and they contributed quite well to the conversations...

I had a good time. Of course, the lunch before the talk at a nice Eyetalian Restaurant--whose name I can't remember and that I will now go and look up---La Terrapa just off of Hnas Mirabal on Luis Ginebra Steet....wonderful service and darn good food.

Driving in the daylight was so much easier!!!....still some surprisingly large and deep potholes that can shake up a fellow.

And the godamnedest thing was just to the North side (the POP side) of Arroyo Grande!! Stupidest thing I have seen on that highway ever!!
Motorcycle racing!! One against one, from the entrance of 27 Waterfalls down to where that piece of the road that is ALWAYS BAD is located -- you know where I mean.

Maybe the race is okay, but what makes it absolutely INSANE is the fact that the roadway is lined with idiots drinking and urging on their favorites and who surge onto the roadway, causing cars who are innocently going the OTher way, to swerve into the oncoming lane where these two guys are coming at you at well over 100 kph or perhaps mph!! They were flying....OMG!!! How close to a bloody disaster!! (Not me fortunately, I was following some cars, but it was close)

yeah, those dominicans... very nice people. smart and knowledgeable about dominican history too, filling in some gaps.

re trujillo: this is why i asked what became of his body. i doubt there would be any test done even if he is exhumed and brought back to DR (panteon nacional, really?). shame about that. or maybe just wishful thinking on my part, as if there had to some sort of logical explanation as to why he was the way he was...
