Has anyone had a good experience with a property insurance company based in the DR?
We are thinking about insuring a home plus the contents? (if feasible and practical)

What exclusions are there for damage? - wind damage? hurricanes?

What was the approx cost per square meter and deductible? :beard:

Many thks!

you had better read the contracts very carefully when you buy insurance here. first thing is to get a copy of the insurance law on homeowner coverage, and read it carefully. this is not like the USA, which protects claimants. there is no functioning Insurance Department, which protects policyholders. if you plan to get XYZ insurance, see if you can get a copy of their policy, so you are forewarned about coverages and exclusions, deductibles and special coverages.

The premiums are high, customer service is low, and contracts are not honored.

and, PJT, it is not like the USA, where there is recourse if they dishonor a contract. who can you run to?

We tried to insure our home and the company said they would have to do a site visit, which was fair enough. They asked if we had a dog. Yes, we said. Oh sorry they said, we don't visit homes with dogs!

All insurance is "Damn Good", until you make a claim that is!
Can you imagine after an earthquake here, the number of claims????
Do you think any of them would be paid???
The companies would just disappear.
What would be your recourse???
Don't Bother!
