I was wondering what was going on there MA. Thanks for the info. I can hear now some of our friends saying how this potential environmental disaster will add to the economy of the DR. It might make sense if limited and if ordinary Dominicans benefited. Neither, of course, will happen.

When landing toward the south at SDQ you fly right over the plantation and from the air it appears to be well managed. It was alarming when the palm trees suddenly started dying off a few years ago. Then I was told that those trees have a productive life of about twenty years and are then replaced. When you drive through the part where the dead trees are and you look closely you will see a new tree growing right next to where the dead tree stands. What I wonder about is why the old trees are left to rot. I would think those tall straight trunks could be put to some good use.

Yes, they are cut into long slabs and then used for siding. They aren't structural. It's mostly been replaced by cinder blocks.

They produce palm oil there. It is a plantation.. not an enviromental disaster. It goes on for miles and miles.. I got lost with a group inside it once for about an hour. It is Famosa that runs it. The stuff smells horrible in production. I think that it is the Manicero or something like that that passes for butter.

The coconut palms here are protected and you cannot cut them down except with government permission. These are African Palms and look quite different. When you go by them now, there is a sign alongside the old dying ones saying that this plantation is under reconstruction or something to that effect ...

From the air you can see that the area of dead trees, that are already being replaced with the new young ones, is really only a small portion of the entire plantation.
