Been going there for many years always use American Express travelers checks. Have not been there in four years and person at the hotel where I'm staying notified me that a few years ago they had a lot of trouble with travelers checks. Over the many years I've been going there people have always said there was trouble cashing them. But when I got there we didn't have any trouble cashing American Express travelers checks. I just feel so much safer using them because if their stolen you can always replace them. There was a lady just before Eddie's old sports bar on the right-hand side would cash them for us. I forget her name does anyone know who she is and is still there and most of all dose she still cash American Express travelers. I have also use guys on the street that friends of mine had said they are okay. Can someone please get back to me on this information or if they know someone else that does accept American Express travelers checks thank you. We will be here on September 19 for two weeks. So they will get a lot of business from us thanks again for your help. Can't wait to get there for my my first cold Presidente beer. Everybody there have a great day in paradise see you soon.

Judy left Sosua many, many years ago.

Many moons ago, Banco Progresso had The AMEX logo on their door, maybe they will cash them, but I know for a fact, they do not have any in stock to replace them if lost.

OP - Use your ATM card, good old fashioned cash works for me.
You could always Western Union yourself in a pinch, kind of like monetary masturbation.

Western Union charges a fortune. There is a service called Xoom that is reasonable but they are a pain in the a$$ to set up the account. But worth while if you need to send or receive money more then 2 or three times.

ATMs are the tourist's way to go. HOWEVER, use the ATMs at the Banks, never those on the street. Lots of scams still around.

Plastic is safer than a Debit Card.

Do you not have a Banco Progresso in Sosua? They are an American Express affiliate.., their bank card is an American Express debit card so they will certainly cash American Express Travelers Checks. I certainly agree with the OP that the travelers checks are safer than plastic which gets cloned from here at a regular rate. You al say use a bank but I think that we have also had horror stories from banks.. so .. YEAH.. I really love American Express Travelers checks

but would also love a rotary cell phone..!! do you know where I can find one???????

A friend of mine visited last year and tried to purchase traveler's checks. The bank in the US laughed at him. Prepaid debit cards, not tied to your bank account, is what travel agencies (those few that still exist) and banks in the US recommend. If lost or stolen, they can be replaced. They can be used for purchases or at ATM's to withdraw money. They can be used in the US for whatever is left on them. And if lost or stolen, they do not touch your bank account. Last time I used them, I purchased two, with my money divided between them. If you feel safer, you can purchase as many as you want and cash them out at ATM's as you go. Bring a sharpie marker to write on them so you can keep up with the balance.

My friend got his from AAA. I always purchased mine from the local Catholic school, as they were sold to raise money (the school got 1% of the sale).

Any travel agency should be able to point you in the correct direction.

American Express has a great website for their traveller's cheques. According to their website, you can change the cheques at Banco Popular locations, including the one in Sosua.

Try replacing them in Sosua fellow.
You will be on the phone with the 1-800 # for a few hundred pesos.
Thanks for the "helpful" info.
