I want to visit for a week in October but haven't decided precisely where to stay or what to do, but the most likely option is Santo Domingo since I know people there. I'm tired of paying for hotels... is renting a decent apt. possible for a week? If so, how do I go about it from afar (the US)? Thanks.

No, I was referring to apartments on the malecon in Santo Domingo, they've been advertised here for years, but when I went to look for the link for you it's now gone. Sorry.
I do know several people who have stayed at Sanchez and loved it.
