From today's DR1 News:

Border patrols increased

In response to a series of protests in Port-au-Prince against President Michel Martelly and his cabinet over the last few weeks, the Dominican authorities have begun a process of strengthening the border area.

The Minister of Defense Sigfrido Pared Perez said that he has increased the number of personnel to ensure they can react to whatever might happen at the border. He said that they are getting constant updates on the situation.

Pared Perez clarified that a national alert had not been declared, but that there was an increase in military personnel at the border, especially in Jimani and Dajabon, the two places where the bi-national market days are held.

Yesterday thousands of protesters marched in Port-au-Prince demanding the resignation of President Martelly and asking for better living conditions.

In Cap-Haitien at least six people were injured by gunshots when demonstrators and the police clashed.

The United Nations has stated that the current political situation in Haiti is becoming a major concern.
