Is fire safety in Santo Domingo hotels up to western standards? Working smoke detectors, escape stairways, etc. Anyone know about this?

If you are staying at a decent hotel, than yes they have smoke detectors and stairways, etc.

The hotels are made from concrete and cinder block. The thing to worry about are the clubs with thatched roofs that have 500-1000 people in them and only one way in and out...

General rule for hotels. Never stay higher than you can jump. Bring your own portable smoke detector, (they are cheap and will save your butt).

NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
AND, nowhere else either!
AND I worked in a hospital for 10 years!!!!
They like to chain "Fire Exits" closed to prevent thefts.
"Fire Safety" is an "OXYMORON" in the DR!
Note To Peter,..........It's not burning wood that kills you, you don't usually burn to death in a fire, you, for lack of a better word, "Smother" to death.
You inhale the toxic fumes, from burning plastics, carpets, bedding, drapes, HOTEL DO have those!
EVEN here!

Along with the excellent "JUMP" rule, make sure you can bust out the window!

The bars on many windows that are low enough to jump make it difficult to just break a window and escape.

Can you recommend a good portable smoke detector?
